Weeping Woman is an iconic
image of unspeakable grief and pain,
representing universal suffering. The
fragmented features and the use of acid
green and purple heighten the painting’s
emotional intensity.
The model for the Weeping Woman was
Picasso’s partner Dora Maar, a passionate,
strong and intelligent woman. The painting
is also often seen as reflecting their
complex and often stormy relationship.
It is an oil canvas painting which is
considered as one of Picasso’s most
famous abstract portraits.
Describe: The Weeping Woman is a painting finished by Pablo
Picasso in France, 1937. This type of artwork can be considered
to be expressionism. There isn’t an actual background scene in
the painting. The background is completed with different lines
and colors. The woman is the focus point of this painting. She is
wearing an accessory on top of her head which demonstrates
her elegance. My first impression of the artwork is that the face
of the woman is not proportionate and is only painted with lines,
no curves. The main colors that are used in this painting are
green, yellow, blue, purple, red and black. The painting is set
mainly of lined and little curves. The mood and visual effect that
this painting portrays can be considered to be suffering, and
sadness.
Analyze: The colors that the author uses can be considered to
be quite different as each color conveys a separate impression.
The light purple that begins at the bottom top of the woman’s
eyes can convey sadness. The other half of the face is mainly
covered in green and yellow; these can be said to interpret other
solid emotions that the painter must have towards this woman as
she was a vital character in Picasso’s life. The painting is created
with mainly lines which can mean that the woman had strong
physical features or that her different emotions were felt
passionately as lines are usually seen as strong technical
elements. The only curves that are being used are for her hair
and eyes. The eyes look quite down or depressive. This is
because the woman is crying, which goes back to the main
mood which is suffering.
Interpret: I believe that Picasso wanted the audience to feel pain
and provide a statement that explains how all women feel and
the agony that they are consistently in. The audience can see
that the woman has peeled away her flesh by corrosive tears to
reveal her white bones. The handkerchief she tries to stuff in her
mouth seems as a shard of glass. This vivid image can convey
pain and hurting. Picasso has expressed the behavior of this
woman several times and often describes the constant tears that
fall off her eyes. So, the feeling conveyed by the artwork is
definitely suffering. Picasso wanted us to feel her and
understand the pain that she was going through. It was not easy
to be a woman during that time since females where often
frowned upon. Picasso demonstrates the appreciation that he
has for her through this painting as he wants the audience to
understand her.
Judge: Finally, the artist’s value may be to evoke pain, as
mentioned previously. This is due to the colors that Picasso used
and the shapes that he draws; not only these technical elements
but also the images that the painter uses within the actual face of
the woman. The painting relates to the entire female community.
This community can understand the painting and know what
Picasso was trying to portray. Every woman is able understand
and comprehend the message behind this painting as we all feel
the same way at one point in our lives. I believe that this is a
strong value in the painting. The weak value lies in the different
colors that the painter chooses. I found it confusing to interpret
other areas of the face as the colors that were used didn’t seem
to match other locations of the face.

Editor's Notes

  • #3: What is our topic yesterday? What is balanced/objective review or criticism? what are the considerations or steps in critiquing any forms of art? Excellent! Let’s continue our lesson on how to write a critique of different forms of art.
  • #6: : I will divide you into 2 groups. I’ll give you a word/phrase and rearrange the letters of the word to form as many words as possible. I’ll give one minute to the activity then afterwards let’s compare your answers. So, if you have similar words to the other group, it will be excluded. Having no similar words, the better! For example: Wonderful now, won, wonder, own, on, no, owl, flower, flow, under, underflow, The winning group will have a sticker and those stickers will be recorded as your performance at the end of our quarter. Let’s begin!
  • #8: Go back to our lesson, last time I’ve mention that we’re good at making criticisms either it is good or unavoidably sometimes bad. We pass judgments on people we meet like how they look, how they dress, etc. Moreover, the goods or services we purchase or avail, we can’t help ourselves to give honest reviews about them, sometimes those are disappointments and commendation from a satisfied customer. But whatever form of criticism or review you know could be beneficial around us take for example E-commerce.   Do you know what E-commerce is?   Nice! You have an idea! From that, I’ll give you award sticker!   So E-commerce is defines as the selling and buying of goods and services over the internet which is a deviation from the traditional means of doing business.   What do you think are examples of e-commerce business?  So, I’ve prepared a video to digs deeper to the importance of doing products reviews.
  • #9: So, I’ve prepared a video to digs deeper to the importance of doing products reviews. Based from the video, what do you think is the importance of doing a product review? The video brings us back the importance of making our own review but I would like to qualify how we do our own criticisms because most of the things that we do is based on our subjective feelings.
  • #10: In that quote, I hope it struck you hard and made you realize when we criticize, it must be objective at all times.   What is the meaning of Objective in critiquing?   The objective sentence is ‘It is raining’ while the subjective is ‘I love raining’. Objective sticks to the facts, not influenced by personal feelings”
  • #12: Basically, it lays down all the basic details about the artwork In this part, it’s a bit higher from just simply describing what is being evaluated. The critic tries to digging deeper into the features and elements used in making a critique a piece of art. The 3rd one, what is Interpretation? Kindly read, Donalyn?
  • #13: In this, the critics tries to make sense or makes an impression derived from that painting. Sometimes it tries to gives meaning or decode the particular message derived from the artwork. Finally the last step, what is Judgment? Kindly read, Ferilyn? highest phase when we give our own criticism in written form. Moreover, the artwork being assessed is appraise and could be compare to other artwork. Let’s say among the sculpture fair among the best of the best so there, let’s judge the material for what it is
  • #14: Limit to artwork
  • #16: The critic writes the description of painting that answers the questions ; What is the title of the painting? the painter? What are focus point of the painting? the colors What types of painting?realism, expressionism?
  • #17: Little deep analysis of the artwork such features that conveys idea
  • #18: So this is the 3rd phase which we are going deeper as we will have a broader context which you will guided by giving facts: The Critic considers the questions such as “Does the colors convey feelings of the woman? Why do you think the artist create the painting?
  • #19: The last phase, the critic tried to give the overall impression about the artwork. The questions he considers are: Does it good or excellent? Is it poorly made? So it is a no as the critic mention the artwork with full of praises
  • #20: Do you have questions about the four steps?
  • #21: What are the 4 steps in writing critique?
  • #23: Decision-making: This skill is essential in making sound decisions in various aspects of daily life, such as choosing products, services, or candidates for a job or a position. Communication: Writing and speaking with objectivity helps in conveying information clearly and concisely. Conflict resolution: By focusing on the facts and evidence rather than personal opinions or feelings, individuals can find common ground and work towards a resolution that is fair and objective.
  • #32: quiz
