Overview of Coaching
• Core belief that individuals are “Creative,
Resourceful and Whole*”

• Uncovers innate potential in each individual
• Holds client accountable for own development
• Shifts the “stories” we tell ourselves

• Focuses on client, not hierarchical

Coaching Techniques - Listening
• Three Levels of Listening:
• Level 1 – Internally Focused

• Level 2 – Client Focused
• Level 3 – Externally Focused
• Listening Tips:

• Level 1 is common – recognize it and banish it!
• Coaching utilizes Levels 2 and 3 simultaneously
Coaching Demonstration - Listening

Listen for the following:
• Emotions expressed in Jessie’s voice
• True meaning behind her words
• External sounds
Coaching Techniques – Powerful Questions
• Open-Ended vs. Closed-Ended Questions
• Encourage deeper thinking

• Cannot be answered with a “yes”, “no”, or nod
• Examples:
• Do you enjoy your current position?

• What about your current position fulfills you?
Coaching Demonstration – Powerful Questions

Listen for the following:
• Open-ended and closed-ended questions
• Different responses to different questions
• Jessie’s reaction to different question
types
Coaching Techniques – Use of Metaphors
• Provide a visual connection to a feeling or situation
• “Short hand” for future reference.

• Helps shift internal monologue.
• Examples:
• It sounds like you have a smorgasbord of

options in front of you.
• I can see you climbing up the mountain towards
the summit.
Coaching Demonstration – Use of Metaphors

Listen for the following:
• Words/ideas that spark a metaphor
• Development of the metaphor
• Jessie’s reaction to the metaphor

• As part of personal management style
• Through the services of a certified coach

• As a complement to existing program activities
• In training with staff/volunteers

• Executives comment that a coach provides:
• Space for reflective conversations

• Opportunities to be challenged on your thinking
• Place to receive open and honest feedback
• Support during difficult times or transitions

Alumni Executive Coaching Opportunity
• Who: 10 YouthActionNet Alumni (fluent in English or Spanish)
• What: Minimum of 8 hours of Executive Coaching
• When: January to October 2014
• Where: Virtually, via telephone, skype, email, etc..

application and submit it by January 10th. We will notify participants by
January 15th.
