Description

It ensures that Hyper-V virtual machines let the hypervisor handle disk I/O scheduling by setting the scheduler to none.

Testing

  • Unit tests
  1. I added a new test addsHypervSchedulerUdevRuleToVendorDataConfig in tests/unit/test_daemon.cpp.
  2. Ran the suite of 3605 tests on MacOS the logic passed successfully ([ OK ] for Daemon.addsHypervSchedulerUdevRuleToVendorDataConfig).

Manual Testing :
Kindly check my comments below. I tried performing a comparative stress test using fio (4k Random Writes, Direct I/O).

Additional Notes

I am resubmitting this again. I am a student and I am definitely human. I just missed that last checkbox in the template because I was focused on the benchmark data.

The thing that i did is setting the scheduler to 'none' for Hyper-V to stop the guest CPU from wasting cycles on redundant I/O reordering. My fio tests on Alpine/WSL2 showed a jump from 4900 to 5583 IOPS. More data in the comments. I have also kept the unit test for build verification

I ran this benchmark on Alpine WSL2/Hyper-V using fio to get a better look at efficiency.

I saw about 4900 IOPS with 16% system CPU usage when we using mq-deadline scheduler after switching to none the throughput jumped to 5583 IOPS for roughly the same CPU and also the 99th percentile latency dropped from 400us to 306us.

Avg Latency : 156.08 usec
99.00th% Latency: 306 usec
CPU Usage: usr=4.60%, sys=16.79%

Key Results (mq dedline):

Throughput: 4900 IOPS (19.1 MiB/s)
Avg Latency (clat): 178.66 usec
99.00th% Latency: 400 usec
CPU Usage: usr=4.50%, sys=16.00%

So efficiency has increased as linux handles 683 more I/O operations per second for almost exactly the same CPU cost

Thank you @Swastik19Nit . I see you did the benchmark in WSL2. Could you test the same using multipass? It would be great if you could provide the step-by-step of your profiling so we can confirm on our end.

Hi @tobe2098 yes I will re run the exact same profiling steps inside multipass instance to make sure the results are consistent and I will follow up shortly with a step-by-step breakdown of the commands and the performance comparison
