Open Source MIDI Software

Jazz++ is a full featured, audio capable, cross-platform MIDI sequencer. Jazz++ offers a lot of functions normally only found in expensive sequencer software, and is used by professionals and hobby musicians all over the world.

QMidiArp is a MIDI arpeggiator, phrase generator and controller LFO for ALSA and JACK. It can run multiple synchronized arpeggiators, LFOs and step sequencers. The modules are also available as LV2 plugins with Qt user interface. QMidiArp has been growing since june 2009 on top of Matthias Nagorni's original arp idea.

The MIDI Sequencer Components are a collection of Delphi components to generate, play, read or write MIDI files. The software is based on manipulation of MIDI events.

This project was started as a Masters project back in 2006. I completed the project as part of my dissertation, and produced software to render Maya script (MEL) to animate a piano model I'd also created. From this I produced a number of videos, which I uploaded periodically to YouTube. Following numerous request I attempted to create a standalone application to playback MIDI performances without the need for a 3rd party 3d modelling/rendering application such as Maya. Given my original background in Java, and it's existing support for MIDI files, I proceeded to attempt to create this using Java 3D. However, (and this sounds like an excuse, which it probably is), life got in the way and I never completed the project to a commercial standard for reproduction. As such, I'm offering the source here in good will to other developers/musicians who might be able to take what I've achieved and carry it forward to a useful learning tool.

eChanter is an Open Source electronic bagpipe project, based on the Arduino platform, using capacitive touch sensors, with polyphonic wavetable synthesis PCM audio at 8KHz. See Files for the development version, eChanter v3.0.

Strasheela is a constraint-based music composition system. The user defines music theories by sets of compositional rules and the system creates music which complies with these theories. User-interface is the programming language Oz.

Cyclone is a powerful music application that handles loops in live context, full MIDI controllable. Goal: to make an app that can compete with Ableton Live in loop handling power. Cyclone works good in realtime Jack environments.

A dumping ground for AKAI Miniak related sysex formats (program, rhythms, sequences), editors and tools.

Goal of this project is to initially create a tool to read sample/program data from an AKAI sampler (S2000) and send it back. Later this might evolve into a GUI-based editor.

PBB Player is a multimidia player that plays and edit various audio and video formats using DirectSound and DirectShow. It also plays DVDs and Audio CDs. All of this in a nice and easy to use GUI. It´s being developed using Borland Delphi.

Fripp is a music composition environment that uses a spreadsheet metaphor for manipulating music with built-in and user-created functions. Supports MIDI playback and recording. Displays music in common notation. Written in Python.

Takt is a text-based language for describing note and chord sequences as well as algorithmic compositon rules with C-like syntax. This software package contains a REPL (read-eval-play loop) interpreter for Takt, a MIDI-file-to-Takt translator, and an Emacs interface program which enables note entry from a MIDI keyboard.

".ECW file" or "waveset" refers to a file with an extension of ".ECW" which stores articulation and sample data used by the MIDI synthesizer of sound cards equipped with an ES1370, ES1371, or ES1373 chip. These sound cards include the Ensoniq AudioPCI, the Sound Blaster! AudioPCI, the Sound Blaster! PCI64, the Sound Blaster! PCI128, and the Sound Blaster Live!. This project is a Perl script which can unpack these files into a .WAV sample, and a corresponding .SFZ file (an open format used by various sample engines to describe sample playback.)

BUZZle means Buzz Logic Enhanced and has neither to to with Buzzle.com or the Buzzle-Game. BUZZle is a free (non-commercial) modular music composing and sequencing tool. It is a completely re-written version of the famous Jeskola Buzz.

BlueJam is a Java-based algorithmic music composer that uses evolutionary techniques and heuristics. Originally intended to evolve solos on the blues scale. BlueJam interfaces with Pure-Data to give real-time output.
