<Ioannis Vranos words> Well a C++ version of Dev-C++ would have much fewer bugs since we all would be able to correct them and why not addd additiona, facilities. </Ioannis Vranos words> I think Ioannis is right... It is not only that we could help to linux version but we could help to windoze version; so we all can improve Dev-C++ development adding functionalities, fixin bugs, etc... It's just my vote for "Ioannis campaign for president" anyway... ;oP Best regards, Santy -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This message and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. If it was written in C++ and thus we had a clue of what is going on in the code, Dev-C++ would be definately more stable. The main problem is that its authors are mainly Pascal/Delphi programmers. :) Ioannis * Ioannis Vranos * Programming pages: http://www.noicys.cjb.net * Alternative URL: http://run.to/noicys |

Development of an IDE in C++ may actually be a pretty good project for students and enthusiasts of the language, and some might really enjoy using and IDE they helped create in some way. So there could be some benefit at least with regard to enjoyment of the project. I doubt my C++ skills are adequately developed to make a significant contribution to such a project yet. However, if I were to follow such a project from the start, this might change rapidly. So from a learning perspective, I'm intrigued. jorge, which language do you speak? it looks like you are using a translator in any case, i think the speed that was being referred to was not the speed of the IDE, but the speed at which it would be developed -----Original Message----- From: dev...@li... Yes, all here are C++ programmers, but only a fraction of us know Delphi. Once the port is complete, I guess the Delphi version can be abandoned and the C++ version continued: 1. It's an IDE for C++. I was really surprised when I found out that Dev-C++ is coded in Delphi, I'm sure you were too :) 2. It can be ported to other platforms 3. It'll be cleaner... more people can read the code and actually understand and modify it 4. Support for other compilers? (BCC32 comes to mind) So, is anyone willing to port to C++? |

Well Builder includes a Delphi compiler too, so there is no need to rewrite everything from the beginning, but we can start converting it slowly, and write the new facilities in C++. The problem is.... since most of us do not know Delphi, and you only understand what is written you have to do the conversion. :) Anyway i am not insisting too much on Dev-C++ written in C++ project, but as a philosophical issue Dev-C++ would be more great if it was written in C++ (and so we had a clue of what is going on). I understand that people here would have prefered Dev having being written in C++, I agree with their arguments about we could help, do things, make something, I got somewhat surprised by the fact of having being written in Delphi, too. But I think that the language you use for write a program is a decission of the first moment, and once you decide a language and having passing the first working lines of coding, there is no return to the beginning, you must then continue with the decision to the end. At the phase it is, I think that asking for change the language, although understandable, is out of place. If someone wants to have a port, then do it, the code is available. Perhaps I would do if know Delphi, but I have no idea about it; and I neither consider me prepared for this task. Well, we all know yet how many people are interested and attracted by this idea, so I think the voting time is end, like the story. |

I would love to help with porting dev to c++, so if ever there arises the need for me, those in charge are welcome to ask. but keep in mind i don't know delphi... one question though... when we say "dev" it's basically just the IDE isn't it? also, could someone reply to me if they get this message, because my message regarding sizeofing an array hasn't seemed to have gotten through... i might send again soon -----Original Message----- From: dev...@li... Despite whatever any person may wish to say regarding porting dev-c++ to c++ being a waste of time, if there are enough people interested, it doesn't matter if certain people think it's a waste of time, we can do it anyway. I certainly see it as an interesting risk-free task that would have many benefits for the dev-c++ community, so let us get some ideas flowing. i personally envisage starting an entirely new c++ project from scratch without using the dev-c++ delphi source very much, but instead using the compiled dev-c++ as a guide as to what we want our c++ version to do. obviously, i think it would be good to write it using dev-c++, but what was that about builder? also, i am a windows person, and i'm not sure what people on other platforms are wanting or doing, but i would be writing the c++ version almost specifically for windows. who else knows windows programming? i am quite familiar with the win32 api, but have no clue about MFC or other container classes and i think they are messy. ok, enough of that, we also need to think about communication. we should have a leader (i would suggest mr vranos) who keeps all the project and details and divides the task among other programmers then collates their code. so are there enough interested people? -----Original Message----- From: dev...@li... Well the leader is currently very busy. :) I am learning C++ and .NET . Also the Dev-C++ is copyright and child of Colin Laplace. My suggestion of C++ coded Dev-C++ was introduced many times in the past by me to persuade Colin. :) But Colin is a Delphi dude. I have not much time to devote to a possible Dev-C++ rewritting in C++ from scratch, i am just asking it from the people who have time and do this (the current Dev-C++ development team Colin Laplace, Hongli Lai and the rest of people). I have time only to bug fix things and add some facilities here and there and say some suggestion. Thanks for the recommendation though, and those "leader" remarks. :)) Ioannis * Ioannis Vranos * Programming pages: http://www.noicys.cjb.net * Alternative URL: http://run.to/noicys |
