Aloha from Honolulu, I just want to say thank you to Malcolm for your patient explanation. I downloaded the latest version of wxDevC++ with wxWidgets Beta 6.4. This does not open with the menu I was writing about (as was happening in Beta 6.3). Most of my stuff has been done with Windows rather than wxWidgets, so I'm very much a newbie in the wxWidgets arena. Your answer has given me insight and perked my interest, so I intend doing more with wxWidgets as opposed to Windows.
