Start your own Society!
Have an idea for a new society at the University of Nottingham? Whether it's a hobby group, a new sport, a cultural community, or a research-focused society, we are here to help you make it happen! At UoNSU, the Student Groups Team will support you every step of the way.
What kind of society can I start?
There are societies for almost everything and across all campuses! You could start:
- A course or academic interest
- A sport or hobby you’re passionate about
- Your culture, background, or identity
- A cause you care about or a volunteering project
… and so much more!
If there’s something you are passionate about and it doesn’t already exist, why not be the one to bring it to life? It all starts with your idea.
What do I need to get started?
To start a new society, your idea must meet these criteria:
- Have clear, legally compliant aims and objectives
- Not contradict the Students’ Union Bye-laws
- Be distinct from any existing society or group
- Have at least 10 interested UoN students
If your idea meets the criteria, the next step is to complete a constitution.
What’s a constitution?
A constitution is a key document that outlines your society’s aims, structure, and committee roles. It acts as the rulebook for how your group will operate.
Find the constitution template here.
Once you have completed your constitution, gather:
- An overview of your idea
- Names of your committee members
- A list of at least 10 interested students
Then, submit everything using the Get Started button below.
What happens next?
Your application will be reviewed by the Affiliations Panel, made up of both students and staff. If successful, your society will be provisionally affiliated, and you'll need to find 15 members to purchase a membership within 6 months.
Please note: Only currently enrolled University of Nottingham students can apply to start a new society. The Affiliations Panel does not consider applicants’ political or personal beliefs when making decisions.
