Last week, the Prime Minister hosted a reception at 10 Downing Street celebrating partnerships that are delivering positive change for the British public. He has been clear that he “wants to do government differently”, and an important part of that is bringing people into government and delivering together in partnership. He has said, “Government is at its best when working in partnership with business, trade unions, civil society, faith groups and communities.” At the reception, the Prime Minister spoke of his personal commitment to partnership working not as a tactic or strategy, but as a fundamental approach to better serve our communities. The event brought together external partners and civil servants that have embraced partnerships. There are many brilliant examples of this across government, but the reception particularly spotlighted: 1. The Department of Health and Social Care partnered with Colgate-Palmolive which donated over 23 million toothbrushes, reaching up to 600,000 children each year. This will help improve children’s health in some of England's most deprived areas, while saving taxpayer money and ensuring children get the best start in life. 2. Department for Education secured partnerships with supermarkets and charities to support breakfast clubs in 750 early adopter schools across England, providing more affordable breakfast options and freeing up funds for enrichment activities. They also partnered with the National Literacy Trust to launch the 2026 National Year of Reading. 3. Department for Science, Innovation and Technology is working with Microsoft and other industry partners to deliver TechFirst, which will help provide AI and tech education to at least one million secondary school students by 2030. 4. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government worked with Lloyds Banking Group and local authorities to launch a pilot in three cities that will transform disused, brownfield sites to build affordable, good quality homes. This “test and learn” approach will inform a national rollout, delivering up to 10,000 homes a year.

Meet GAIL: AI that empowers, not replaces That's exactly what's happening at the Department for Work and Pensions, where GAIL (Generative Artificial Intelligence for Learning) is transforming how we train civil servants. The breakthrough? "GAIL doesn't replace our learning designers, it empowers them," says Kayla Fox from DWP's Learning Design and Delivery - AI and Innovation team. Here's how: Learning designers feed GAIL complex policy documents and use prompts to tell it how to create draft learning content. GAIL drafts the PowerPoint decks, video scripts and e-learning outlines. Then our designers do what they do best – turning those drafts into engaging animations, interactive quizzes and compelling content tailored for different audiences. "Our learners are colleagues from across DWP; from new work coaches starting their careers to experienced staff who need to update their knowledge when policies change," Kayla explains. The impact? Training that actually sticks. Thousands of DWP colleagues equipped to deliver brilliant service to jobseekers, pensioners and people claiming benefits across the UK. Done right: Every piece of content is human-approved. User experience comes first. The system runs offline. No shortcuts, no risks. "We're not just adopting AI – we're pioneering innovation," adds Kayla. "Our test-and-learn philosophy means GAIL evolves constantly, shaped by real feedback from real users." This is what modern government looks like: technology enhancing human brilliance, not replacing it. The potential beyond DWP? We're already exploring how other departments could adapt this approach. Are you a civil servant ready to explore AI in your role? Join this year's #OneBigThing: #AIForAll – complete the training and check your intranet for details.

Ahead of Remembrance Sunday this weekend, the Cabinet Secretary visited the Department for Culture, Media and Sport team responsible for organising the annual commemoration at the Cenotaph. This year holds particular significance as we mark 80 years since Victory in Europe and Victory in Japan. Earlier this year, the team delivered VE Day 80 commemorations; reportedly the biggest community event in recent history, with more than 17.2 million people actively taking part. The visit recognised the dedication and expertise required to deliver this important period of reflection, bringing together veterans, military personnel and members of the public to honour those who have served and sacrificed. The Cabinet Secretary said: "Around Remembrance Sunday, our focus is rightly on commemorating those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defending our nation. Behind the scenes, this dedicated team of civil servants takes great pride in delivering services and events that have the eyes of the nation upon them. This is public service at its best, and it's the standard of pride and care I want us all to bring to our work across the Civil Service."
