Grid Pattern Authentication

Last updated on

Grid Pattern Authentication allows Drupal administrators to protect their accounts using a personal visual pattern instead of relying on SMS, email, or an authenticator application.

With Grid Pattern, you select a sequence of four tiles from a number grid and use the same visual pattern each time you log in. The numbers displayed on the tiles change during each authentication session, while your selected pattern remains the same.

This makes Grid Pattern a phone-free and offline-capable authentication method for securing Drupal administrator logins.

This guide explains how to configure and verify Grid Pattern Authentication using the  Two Factor Authentication - TFA / Passwordless Login module for Drupal.

Installation Steps

Prerequisites:

Configure Grid Pattern as a 2FA Method:

  • Log in to your Drupal site as an administrator.
  • Navigate to Configuration → People → miniOrange Two-Factor Authentication (2FA / MFA)
  • You can also directly access: /admin/config/people/miniorange_2fa/setup_twofactor
  • Navigate to the 2FA for Primary Admin tab.
  • From the left-side menu, select Grid Pattern.
  • In the Grid Pattern section, click Configure.
  • A Configure Grid Pattern pop-up will appear.
  • In Step 1, select any four tiles from the number grid in the order you want to use as your authentication pattern.
  • For example, you may select:
  • Top-left → Center → Bottom-right → Middle-right
  • Your selected sequence becomes your personal Grid Pattern.
  • In Step 2, enter the numbers displayed on the four selected tiles in the same order in which you selected them.
  • Click Confirm Pattern to save your configuration.

Important: Remember Your Pattern, Not the Numbers

  • The numbers displayed on the grid are not permanent.
  • For example, during configuration, your selected pattern may display:
  • 4 → 7 → 2 → 9
  • During your next login, the same tiles may display:
  • 8 → 3 → 6 → 1
  • You should therefore remember the location and sequence of the tiles, rather than the numbers displayed on them.
  • Your visual pattern remains the same, while the numbers change between authentication sessions.
  • After clicking Confirm Pattern, your Grid Pattern Authentication method is configured successfully.
  • You can now verify that the authentication method works correctly by logging in again.

User Experience:

  • After configuring Grid Pattern Authentication, log in to the Drupal site.
  • After your credentials are successfully verified, the Grid Pattern authentication screen will appear.
  • Look at the number grid and identify the tiles that match your configured visual pattern.
  • Click the tiles in your pattern sequence; their numbers will automatically fill in the text field or either you can directly enter the sequence numbers in the text field.
  • Then click the Verify button. If the pattern is correct, you will be successfully logged in to your Drupal site.
