Teaching Can Lead to Success
Ana Ustad, I’m a Teacher
Let me start by telling you a story. I’ve been teaching here in Morocco for over a decade. A while after I started teaching in Casablanca, I noticed that people I didn’t even know would often address me as Ustad
(Arabic for teacher), and this puzzled me, so I asked my Moroccan wife How does everyone know that I’m a teacher? Is it that obvious? I mean, is it written across my forehead or something?
She laughed and told me that when people call me Ustad
it doesn’t mean that they know I’m a teacher, it’s used also as a way to show respect to people you address.
This idea introduces my first point. Teachers, everywhere in the world, are respected. As teachers, we have an essential role in society that everyone understands. I compared the wages I make as an English teacher in Morocco to the hourly wage that I would be making doing the same work in the USA and this is what I found: I would be paid about $12.50 an hour in the USA, which works out to a little over 100 dirhams an hour, so, it’s
