    About the Author

    Preface

    Personal Statement:

If you know me from Sober Is Dope, you know that I have always been deeply fascinated by science, the brain, and the power of healing. In many ways, I feel as though I have been preparing for this book for the past twelve years. Everything that has inspired me in recovery, from neuroscience and faith to human resilience, is woven into these pages. This book is a work of love. It is not a medical manual but a labor of passion, the result of years of reading, studying, and learning from thousands of sources. I am a hobbyist when it comes to science and the mind, but I am also an expert in recovery through lived experience.

Addiction scarred me, but recovery, along with my hunger to understand how the brain heals, has shaped me into a student of neuroscience. When I began my journey of recovery from alcohol addiction more than twelve years ago, I quickly realized that sobriety was about much more than putting down the drink. It was about healing my mind, my body, and my spirit. The greatest challenge I faced was repairing the damage alcohol had done to my brain. I experienced forgetfulness, brain fog, depression, and the painful fear that I had permanently broken something inside of myself. Over time, I discovered that the brain has an incredible ability to heal. Science calls this neuroplasticity, the natural power of the brain to rewire, repair, and create new connections.

Through faith, persistence, nutrition, meditation, movement, and years of research, I experienced firsthand the miracle of brain recovery. My own journey became the foundation for this book. The Sober Brain Reset is not just about preventing relapse. It is about reclaiming your full mental power. It is about repairing dopamine receptors, protecting memory, and even reducing the risk of early Alzheimer’s and dementia, challenges that are often overlooked in recovery. For those of us who have lived through addiction, the stakes are higher, but so is the possibility of renewal. This book blends hard science with lived experience. It draws on peer-reviewed research, expert studies, and my own testimony to provide a practical roadmap for anyone who wants to strengthen their brain, whether they are in early sobriety, long-term recovery, or simply committed to brain longevity.

The Sober Brain Reset Protocol you will discover here is a system that grew out of my struggle and survival. This book is meant to be used. It is a blueprint for healing, a textbook for recovery, and a framework for long-term brain health. The science is solid, the research is real, but the perspective is personal. My hope is that you approach it with patience, curiosity, and an open mind. I invite you to join me in this work. If something here resonates, put it into practice. If something here could be improved, share it. This book is alive. It is meant to be studied, applied, challenged, and grown. It is a community effort, and I am grateful to have you with me. Thank you for choosing The Sober Brain Reset. Thank you for supporting this mission. Together, we can rewrite our stories. ~ Pop Buchanan

    How to Use This Book

This book is not meant to be rushed. Healing the brain is a lifelong process, and the information here is designed to be lived with, revisited, and applied in daily life. Each chapter offers both practical steps and the science that supports them.

Approach this book at your own pace. You may decide to read it from beginning to end, or you may open to the chapter that feels most urgent for your journey right now. Either way, take your time. Highlight passages, return to exercises, and use the Works Cited as a guide to go deeper into the research.

Think of this book as a companion rather than a quick read. It is both a testimony of healing and a blueprint for recovery and brain health. Let it support you as you build strength, clarity, and resilience.

My hope is that as you read, you will feel empowered. Addiction may have left scars, but it did not end your story. The human brain is resilient, and with the right care, it can rebound in ways that are astonishing. This is not just theory, it is my life. And if I can reset my brain, so can you.

Welcome to The Sober Brain Reset. May it bring you healing, knowledge, and hope. ~ Pop Buchanan

    The Vision and Framework

    1

The Working Thesis of The Sober Brain Reset

Sobriety is the foundation of brain healing, but sobriety alone is not enough. Addiction is not just a behavioral or moral problem. It is a neurobiological injury compounded by trauma in all its forms. This includes emotional trauma such as grief, loss, abandonment, and rejection. It includes nutritional trauma from poor diet, sugar, and processed food. It includes environmental trauma from toxins, pollution, and chronic stress. It includes societal trauma from stigma, fear, and exclusion. It includes internal trauma from negative self-beliefs and destructive self-talk. And it also includes the direct trauma caused by substances themselves. Alcohol, drugs, and addictive chemicals damage neural circuits, weaken dopamine systems, and scar the brain with repeated cycles of intoxication and withdrawal. These experiences overload and rewire the brain’s stress, memory, and emotional circuits, accelerating brain aging and increasing the risk of dementia.

Trauma is the unifying theory that explains both why addiction takes hold and why recovery must address more than substance removal. Addiction and trauma converge on the same neural systems. The amygdala becomes overactive, the prefrontal cortex loses regulation, dopamine pathways are flattened, and the hippocampus weakens. This is why healing trauma is not an optional step but the core of brain recovery. Trauma-informed care makes sobriety sustainable, lowers relapse risk, and restores the brain’s ability to feel safe, learn, and grow.

The Sober Brain Reset begins here. Sobriety and abstinence clear away toxic interference, trauma healing restores the foundation of safety, and the brain regains the capacity to rewire itself. With this base, neuroplasticity, dopamine repair, metabolic resilience, neurovascular detoxification, and spiritual activation can take root.

    Key Supporting Points

    1. Sobriety and abstinence are the foundation.

Healing begins when substances are removed and a sober environment is created. Sobriety clears harmful interference, while abstinence provides stability. Together, they create the conditions for trauma healing, neuroplasticity, and dopamine repair. Without sobriety and abstinence, no therapy, supplement, or lifestyle intervention can reach its full potential.

    2. Trauma is the unifying theory of brain injury and recovery.

Trauma is not only about war or abuse. It includes grief, loss, abandonment, rejection, environmental toxins, junk food, sugar, fear from media, and self-sabotaging beliefs. All forms of trauma leave imprints on the nervous system. Healing trauma reopens neuroplasticity, calms dopamine disruption, and strengthens resilience, making long-term recovery possible.

    3. Neuroplasticity is lifelong.

Even after years of addiction, the brain retains the ability to grow new connections and adapt. Trauma healing accelerates this process by releasing stored emotional pain and allowing healthier circuits of thought, memory, and behavior to form. Recovery becomes not just possible but powerful when neuroplasticity is supported through practice, movement, therapy, and reflection.

    4. Dopamine systems are central.

Addiction damages dopamine pathways, making ordinary pleasures feel dull and relapse more likely. Trauma further disrupts dopamine regulation. Through trauma-informed care, proper nutrition, supplementation, and lifestyle change, dopamine balance can be restored. Healing trauma directly lowers relapse risk
