Examples - Stress Analysis 1

The document contains 4 examples of stress analysis problems: 1) Determine the stress in a tie-back rod and clevis pin diameter for a jib crane under a 1500 lb load. 2) Find the maximum bending stress, shear stress, and deflection in a wooden beam under a 500 lb/ft uniform load. 3) Select the lightest wide flange beam that can support a given loading diagram. 4) Determine the bending and shear stresses at a point on a beam carrying various loads using a stress element.

MET 210W Stress Analysis 1 Examples 1.

The jib crane shown can support a maximum load of 1500 pounds at x = 10 ft. The tie-back rod BC has a diameter of 3/4 inch. The clevis at each end of the rod is to be secured with a zinc-plated clevis pin in double shear. The crane trolley weighs 70 pounds and the beam weighs 13 pounds per foot. Determine the stress in the middle of rod BC. Select a clevis pin diameter for joints B and C. Use N = 6 on Sus. Su = 71 ksi.

2. A simple beam with a uniform load of 500 lbs/ft is shown in the figure below. The beam has a rectangular cross-section and is made of wood, E = 1.5 x 106 psi. Find the maximum bending stress, the maximum shear stress and the maximum deflection in the beam.
