ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

OBJECTIVE: To Introduce the concept of Environmental Science.


EXAMINATION
The internal examination will carry 40% mark i.e. 40 marks. The external examination will be of 60%
marks i.e. 60 marks. The question paper will contain questions equally distributed in all units. In all, 8
questions will be asked in question paper out of which students will require to attempt 5 questions.
UNIT-I
Environment: meaning, structure and type of environment, components of environment, environment and
society, environment and resources. Man Environmental relationship: Approaches to study, Mans
Interaction with environment (historical to present day).
UNIT-II
Environmental Degradation: Meaning of degradation, types of degradation, processes of degradation,
causes of degradation, Religious and Philosophical factors, deforestation and environmental degradation,
agricultural development and environmental degradation, population growth and environmental
degradation, urbanization and environmental degradation, Modern technology and environmental
degradation.
UNIT-III
Ecology and Ecosystem: Definition of ecology and ecosystem, types of Ecosystem, components of
ecosystem, functions of ecosystem, Productivity and stability of ecosystems.
Environmental Disasters: Meaning and concepts, types of hazards and disaster, man induced and natural
hazards, global warning, ozone depletion, green house effect and other major environmental problems.
UNIT IV
Environmental Pollution (Air, water, solid, noise pollution): Meaning, definition, sources, types, adverse
effects and methods of control.
UNIT V
Environmental Planning and Management: Concepts, aspects and approaches, resources management,
ecological management, biosphere reserves, management of wild life.
Environmental Regulation and Rules: Vision of environment by Govt. of India, Environmental Policy,
waste disposal rules and laws and legislation enacted by Parliament for environmental protection.
