MASTER STANDING ORDERS
1. The OOW must at all times comply with the
applicable International REGULATION !OR T"E

essential that the )essel is at all times na)i*ate' at
sa+e spee' ha)in* 'ue re*ar' to the tra++ic 'ensity

-. The OOW is to maintain his watch on the bri'*e
until properly relie)e' .houl' the OOW ha)e any
reason to belie)e that the relie)in* O++icer is unable
to carry out his watch (eepin* 'uties e++ecti)ely then
he shoul' not han' o)er the watch an' in+orm the
.aster imme'iately
/. The relie)in* O++icer shoul' present himsel+ on the
bri'*e at least 10 minutes be+ore the commencement
o+ his watch an' will not ta(e o)er the watch until he
has satis+ie' himsel+ re*ar'in* any .asters special
instructions & the positions& course an' spee' o+
)essel& e++ect o+ ti'es& current an' weather & all
(nown charte' ha,ar's an' )essel in the )icinity&
compass error & any shallow water e++ects li(ely to be
encountere' 'urin* his ensuin* watch or any other
problem.
1. The OOW is not to han' o)er the watch 'urin* any
manoeu)re
2. 3espite the presence on the bri'*e o+ the .aster or a
pilot& the OOW remains in char*e o+ the )essel an'
shoul' he ha)e any 'oubt as to the pilot actions or
intentions& he shoul' noti+y the .aster imme'iately .
When the .aster is on the 4ri'*e& the OOW remains
responsible +or the watch until the master the .aster
in+orm him clearly that he is ta(in* o)er
responsibility.
5. The OOW shoul' be +amiliar with the use o+ all the
electronic na)i*ational ai's carrie' on the bri'*e. It
must be borne in min' that RA3AR is only an AI3
TO NA$IGATION an' must not be use' merely to
'etect the presence o+ another )essel. A close
6uarters situation can easily be a)oi'e' by early
'etection an' plottin* o+ the ran*es an' bearin* o+
)essel. ome watch (eepers appear to re*ar' as 7ol'
+ashione'8 the metho's o+ )isual position +i9in* an'
loo( out an' solely 'epen' on the ra'ar +or this. This
practise shoul' not be +ollowe'.

A. The OOW shoul' not hesitate to use the whistle in

10. On encounterin* or suspectin* re'uce' )isibility the
OOW shall +irstly comply with the %ollision
Re*ulations an' imme'iately in+orm the .aster. The
OOW shoul' also alert the 'uty En*ineer in the
En*ine Room re*ar'in* possibility o+ en*ine
mo)ements 'ue to restricte' )isibility
11. The OOW is to call the .aster imme'iately shoul'
he be in any 'oubt or 'i++iculty +or whatsoe)er
reason or shoul' he suspect that any 'an*er or
'ama*e +rom any source may occur to the )essel or
personnel
1-. The Gyro Error shall be ta(en at least twice 'aily
an' properly note' in the Gyro error noteboo( .The
OOW shall ensure that the Gyro error is properly
applie' to the course bein* steere' .3urin* the
course o+ the watch& whilst un'erway the OOW shall
ma(e +re6uent comparisons o+ the course between
the ma*netic an' Gyro %ompasses
1/. Whilst )sl at anchor& an e++icient an' proper watch
shall be maintaine' ha)in* 'ue re*ar' to the )essel
position& pro9imity o+ other )essel or 'an*ers&
currents& ti'es& weather& )isibility& state o+ en*ine
rea'iness& personnel on boar' an' +ire watch.

E)en a )essel passin* well clear or o)erta(in* can
su++er brea('own o+ men or machinery an' put you
in 'an*erous close 6uarters situation unless a
constant an' care+ul watch is maintaine' by you all
times.
