Analyzing Japanese Society's Influences

Essential Question: In many ways Japanese society was like both Chinas
and Europes. Based on analysis the following documents, was Japanese
society more like Chinas or more like Europes?

Documents

Influences from China and Korea p. 201, The Arts in Heian p. 206-207, Samurai
Society p. 213, Art in Europe and Japan p. 250, Comparing and contrasting Europe
and Japan p. 251

1. Read the essential question as a group and determine what is being asked.

2. Create a chart like the one below to show information that group members

already know

3. Read and review the first document together. Highlight, circle or underline
any evidence that may help you answer the essential question.

4. Write an analysis of the first document which includes:


a. a citation of the source
b. a summary of the source
c. the source of the source (who wrote it? Primary or secondary?)
d. an evaluation of the reliability of the source (is it believable? Is there
bias?)
e. an explanation of what position it supports.

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the remaining documents.

6. Cut out each source and analysis and attach it to a large poster paper.

7. Based on the evidence write your groups answer the essential question in a
complete paragraph. Cite at least three pieces of evidence from your
document analysis in your paragraph.
