Force and Couple Analysis for Equilibrium

This document contains 10 problems involving forces, moments, and torques acting on various mechanical systems: 1) A pulley system with equal cable tensions of 400 N. Determine the magnitude and vector notation of the force on the pulley. 2) Determine the spring force and magnitude of the vertical resultant force balancing a given force. 3) Replace a couple and force with a single force applied at a distance b from the point of rotation. 4) For two pulleys with belt tensions, locate the resultant force passing through the center if its direction is given.

ASSIGNMENT - 2
Forces and Moments

1. If the equal tensions T in the pulley cables are 400 N, express in vector
notation the force R exerted on the pulley by the two tensions. Determine
the magnitude of R.

Fig.2

2. Determine the magnitude Fs of the tensile spring force in order that the
resultant of Fs and F is a vertical force. Determine the magnitude R of
this vertical resultant force.
3. Replace the couple and the force shown in Fig. 3 by a single force F
applied at point D. Locate D by determining the distance b.

4. Two integral pulleys are subjected to the belt tensions shown in Fig. 4.
If the resultant R of these forces passes through the centre O, determine
T and the magnitude of R and the counterclockwise angle it makes with
the x-axis.

5. A 50 N horizontal force is applied to the handle of the industrial water

valve shown in Fig. 5. The force is perpendicular to the vertical plane
containing line OA of the handle. Determine the equivalent force-couple
system at point O.

6. Find the angle of tilt with the horizontal so that the contact force at B
will be one half of that at A for the smooth cylinder (see Fig. 6).
7. A smooth homogeneous sphere of mass m and radius r is suspended by a
wire AB of length 2r from point B on the line of intersection of the two
smooth vertical walls at right angles to one another (Fig 7). Determine
the reaction R of each wall against the sphere.

8. A three-legged stool is subjected to the load L as shown in Fig 8. Deter-
mine the vertical force reaction under each leg. Neglect the weight of the
stool.
9. Determine the magnitudes of the force R and couple M exerted by the
nut and bolt on the loaded bracket (Fig 9) at O to maintain equilibrium.

10. A torque of 24 N.m is required to turn the bolt about its axis. Determine
P and the forces between the smooth hardened jaws of the wrench and
the corners A and B of the hexagonal head. Assume that the wrench fits
easily on the bolt so that contact is made at corners A and B only.
