Linear Inequalities for Students

This document provides sample problems and solutions for solving linear inequalities and graphing the solution sets on a number line. It contains 18 sample problems with step-by-step solutions showing how to isolate the variable, determine the appropriate inequality sign, and express the solution set using set-builder and interval notation. The key steps are to distribute, combine like terms, and isolate the variable, reversing the inequality sign when dividing or multiplying by a negative number. The solutions are presented using set-builder and interval notation and by graphing the solution set on a number line.

Sample Problems - Solutions

1. !7 > !5x + 3
Solution: Solving linear inequalities requires almost the same techniques as solving linear equations. There
is only one di§erence: when multiplying or dividing an inequality by a negative number, the
inequality sign must be reversed.

!7 > !5x + 3 subtract 3

!10 > !5x divide by ! 5
2 < x

When we divided both sides by !5, we reversed the inequality sign. The Önal answer is all real numbers
greater than 2. This set of numbers can be presented in numerous ways:
1) set-builder notation: fxjx > 2g
2) interval notation: (2; 1)
3) graphing the solution set on the number line:

2. 3 (x ! 2) " 2x + 1
Solution:

3 (x ! 2) " 2x + 1 distribute
3x ! 6 " 2x + 1 subtract 2x
x!6 " 1 add 6
x " 7

The Önal answer is all real numbers less than or equal to 7. This set of numbers can be presented in numerous
ways:
1) set-builder notation: fxjx " 7g
2) interval notation: (!1; 7]
3) graphing the solution set on the number line:

3. 5 (4x ! 1) ! (x ! 3) # !x ! 2
Solution:

5 (4x ! 1) ! (x ! 3) # !x ! 2 distribute
20x ! 5 ! x + 3 # !x ! 2 combine like terms
19x ! 2 # !x ! 2 add 2
19x # !x add x
20x # 0 divide by 20
x # 0

The Önal answer is all real numbers greater than or equal to 0. This set of numbers can be presented in
numerous ways: in set-builder notation: fxjx # 0g ; in interval notation: [0; 1) ; or by graphing the solution
set on the number line:

m + 4 4m + 3
4. ! >2
2 5
Solution:
m + 4 4m + 3
! > 2 make everything a fraction
2 5
m + 4 4m + 3 2
! > bring to common denominator
2 5 1
5 (m + 4) 2 (4m + 3) 20
! > multiply by 15
10 10 10
5 (m + 4) ! 2 (4m + 3) > 20 distribute
5m + 20 ! 8m ! 6 > 20 combine like terms
!3m + 14 > 20 subtract 14
!3m > 6 divide by ! 3
m < !2

When we divided both sides by !3, we reversed the inequality sign. The Önal answer is all real numbers less
than !2. This set of numbers can be presented in numerous ways: in set-builder notation: fxjx < !2g ; in
interval notation: (!1; !2) ; or by graphing the solution set on the number line:
