It is the capital of England and United kingdom. It is placed on the banks of River
Thames, at the south-east of Great Britain. The centre of the city, the ancient
city of London, keeps still its medieval limits, but from 19 th century, it has
expanded around, forming a metropolis.
In London, there are four places declared World Heritage by UNESCO: the
Tower of London, the settlement of Greenwich, the Royal Botanic Gardens, in
Kew and the set formerly for the Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey
and St. Margaret's Church.
London´s population consists in a blend of ethnicities, cultures, and religions. In
the city more than 300 languages are spoken. Its Urban Area is the biggest of
European Union. Its public transport network is one of the largest all over the
world and Heathtrow Airport is the busiest of Europa.

History
Romans built it around year 43 and called id Londinium. Later, the city survived to
the raids of Saxons and Vikings. Edward The Confessor, the penultimate
Anglo-Saxon king built his Abbey and his Palace in West minster and William
The Conqueror gave it independence and government.
In 1666, the Great Fire of London destroyed 5/6 of the city, that was rebuilt by
Sir Christopher Wren. In 18th century, it was rich and important like centre of a
empire growing and, with the population explosion in 19 th century, a expansion of
Victorians suburbs happened. In 20 th century, London was devastated again by
the Luftwaffe during World War II and it due being rebuilt again.

A.- World Heritage Sites


1.-The Tower of London
To talk about the Tower of lLondon is like to talk about the horror that its only
name has sown.
Everybody that offended the king, was imprisoned there, and only go out to be
tortured or executed in Tower Hill.
It is over 900 years, since that in 1078, William the Conqueror ordered its
construction to defend London and Normans from any kind of attack. Later,
Richard the Lion-Hearted ordered to buid a pit around it.
In it have been executed both villains and noble people. Villains were taken to
Tower Hill, but aristocracy were executed in Green Tower and buried in the
Church of St. Peter ad Vincula .

Some people executed in the Tower were (Anne Boleyn, Margarer Pole,
Catherine Howard or Jane Grey). The last prisoner was Rudolph Hess.
In The London Tower happened other famous events like the Theft of the
Crown Jewels in 1671.
The 42 guards that save the Tower are called Beefeaters. In it also live eight
crows because, according to legend, if they disappear, England Kingdom will
collapse.

Structure
The whole of buildings has got two entrances: the Main Gate and the Traitors´
Gate, where everyone that was going to be executed entered.
A big wall rounds the whole. In it there are many towers. The more famous are the
Beaucham Tower, the Green Tower, the Wakefield Tower, the Martin Tower,
the White Tower and the Bloody Tower, where were murdered the two first
princes.
St. John´s Chapel, in the White Tower, and The House of Jewels, where the
Crown Jewels are kept, are the most famous sites inside.

2.-Palace of Westminster
It is the place where the two houses of the Parliament of United
Kingdom, the House of Lords and the House of Commons, meet.
It is placed in the north shore of Thames, in City of Westminster, near
other governmental buildings, in White Hall.
It was royal residence, but any king has stood there since 17 th century.
Most of the current structure is of 19th century, date when the palace
was rebuilt after a fire that destroyed many parts of the building.
Here is placed the clock tower, that contains the Big Ben.
The palace has got more than a thousand of rooms. The most
important are the Room of the House of Lords and the House of
Commons. The palace has got meeting rooms, libraries, corridors,
dinning rooms, restaurants and gyms.
Important state ceremonies holds there. The most important is the
Parliament Opening Ceremony.

3.-Westminster Abbey and St Margaret's Church


Westminster Abbey, also called Collegiate Church of St Peter at Westminster
is a Gothic church as bigger as a cathedral. It is the place for Englis kings´
coronations and burials. It is situated next to the Palace of Westminster.

The Anglican Church of St Margaret is historically part of the hundreds of


Ossulstone of the County of Middlesex. It is situated in the grounds of
Westminster´s Abbey in Parliament Square and it is the church of British
Parliament. It is dedicated to Margaret of Antioch.

B.-Other places

1.-Piccadilly Circus
Piccadilly Circus is to London that “la Puerta del Sol” to Madrid or “ l´ Avenue
des Champs-Élysées” to Paris: the busiest place for London people and the
best site to go shopping, meeting friends or go partying.

2.-Chinatown
It is a bit of Asia inside of London, an authentic mini-neighbourhood, beyond
artificial inventions. It was born because of it was the site chosen by immigrants
come from Hong Kong to live in London.

3.-The London Eye


The London Eye or the Millennium Wheel is the highest panoramic wheel all over
the world, with a height of 135m. It was built in 2000 to celebrate the new
millennium.

4.-Trafalgar Square
It is one of the famous and popular squares on London. It was built to
commemorate the victory of the English fleet, commanded by Nelson, versus the
Spanish and French fleets on 21st October, 1905 at the famous Battle of
Trafalgar.

5.-Soho
It always has been one of the dangerous and dirty neighbourhood in London.
However, here there are apartments, restaurants, fashion-discos and trendy
clothes shops. It all mixed with the neons from the sex shops that still stay here,
makes an attractive atmosphere that gives to Soho a modern fun and liberate
appearance. It is the gay neighbourhood of London too.

6.-Notting Hill
It is a neighbourhood famous because of its houses´ faces (they are in different
colours and always shinning), its parks and gardens and its antique markets, but
overall it is famous because of its carnivals.

7.-St Paul´s Cathedral


It was built between 1676 and 1760 by Christopher Wren on the ruins of the
ancient Cathedral that was destroyed by the fire in 1666. It is one of the few
buildings that survived to World War II.

8.-The City of London


It is a neighbourhood placed at the East of London, near St Paul´s Cathedral.
Here is where London had its original centre, although the Fire in 1666 and the
bombing of World War II have changed this neighbourhood at all. Nowadays it is
the financial centre of London where you can see Bank of England, The
Monument, St Paul´s Cathedral, the Museum of London or de Barbican.

9.-The British Museum


It is the first museum all over the world and the biggest and most important
collection of archaeological things around the world with pieces from the Rosseta
Stone to Greek and Roman antiquities like highlights of the Parthenon´s frieze.

10.-Harrods
They are the most famous department stores around the world. It is in the 87-135
Brompton Road . Their timetables are Monday through Saturday from 10:00 to
20:00 and Sundays from 12:00 to 18:00.
The nearest metro station is Knightsbridge.

11.-Candem Market
It is from London what “el rastro” is from Madrid. It is a huge market formed by
shops, stalls and several buildings where you can finding everything from punk
style boots to English antique furniture and a thousand of things more.

12.- Covent Garden


Covent Garden was the neighbourhood of the wholesale of fruits and vegetables
until 70s . Nowadays it is one of the livest neighbourhoods in London, with it
centre located in Apple Market and the square that circle this building.

The most characteristics features of this site are the street performances that
there are at the streets that round the market, like mime artists, magicians or
jugglers.
