Chapter 3
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the research design, respondents of the study, instrument
validation, data gathering procedures and statistical treatment of data.
Research Design
This study entitled “Utilization of Multimedia Devices in Asian Studies” used
descriptive survey method of research in assessing the utilization of multimedia
instruction among the teachers of selected public secondary school in Congressional
District I of Nueva Ecija. According to Lewitt (2009) descriptive research involves
collection of a data in order to test hypothesis or to answer questions concerning the
current status of the subject of the study. It was used to obtain information concerning the
current status of the phenomena to describe “what exist” with respect to variables or
conditions or situations.
Survey was used in the study since it focused on the present condition on how the
multimedia instruction was being utilized by the secondary teachers of Congressional
District I of Nueva Ecija. The main goal of this type of research is to describe the data
and characteristics about what is being studied. The idea behind this type of research is to
study frequencies, averages, and other statistical calculations.
It is descriptive rating because it described the attributes of teachers in terms of
(age, sex, civil status, highest educational attainment, position, seminars / workshops
attended, length of service in teaching and number of years utilizing multimedia for
24
instruction), also the level of knowledge of the teachers using multimedia in teaching the
subject, the available multimedia devices used in different topics in Asian studies and the
students engagement.
Research Instruments
The researcher used the questionnaire survey as the main instrument to determine
the utilization effect of multimedia instruction in teaching the subject Asian Studies. The
questionnaire was composed of four parts. The Part one includes the questionnaire
checklist for the teacher – respondents on their profile along with the following variables;
age, sex, civil status, highest educational attainment, position, seminars attended, length
of service in teaching and number of years utilizing multimedia for instruction. Part two
includes level of knowledge of the teachers using multimedia in teaching Asian Studies.
Third part includes the questionnaire checklist about the available multimedia devices
used in different topics in Asian Studies. Separate questionnaire on this part will be used
for student – respondents.
The Respondent of the Study
The respondents of the study were the teachers teaching the subject Asian Studies
and Grade 7 students of selected Public Secondary Schools of Congressional District I of
Nueva Ecija.

Instrument Validation
The researcher adapted the questionnaire-checklist from the study of Malicdem
(2006) on the list of multimedia devices and improves under the guidance and assistance
of his adviser and put into use the information and ideas that are gathered from books.
Expert opinions of knowledgeable persons also beseech. After its revision, the
instruments were administered to the respondents to gather the data needed in the study.
To establish the validity of the questionnaires it is tried out and submitted for
checking and evaluation to the thesis panel members and the adviser. Corrections and
changes were carefully integrated for the development of the paper. Comments and
suggestions were taken into consideration in finalizing the questionnaires.
Data Gathering Procedures
The researcher sought official permission from the Schools Division
Superintendent and Principals of selected Secondary Public Schools of Congressional
26
District I of Nueva Ecija to float the questionnaire to teachers and students. The
questionnaires were distributed and administered personally in their respective schools.
Statistical Treatment of Data
The data were gathered through the questionnaire checklist accomplished by the
teachers and students; data were tabulated, consolidated, and collated for easy
interpretation in the form of tables and textual presentations. In the statistical presentation
of the data, percentage, ranking and average weighted mean were used.
Problem No. 1 The percentage and frequencies were used to described the data gathered
on the profile of teachers along the variables on age, sex, civil status, highest educational
attainment, position, seminars attended, length of service in teaching and number of years
utilizing multimedia for instruction.
Problem No. 2 Level of Knowledge of the Teachers using computer in teaching was
described in terms of its mode and Average Weighted Mean with corresponding
interpretations. The following scale was used to interpret the result.
Rating Scale Point Range Descriptive Equivalent
5 4.21 – 5.00 Highly Knowledgeable
4 3.41 – 4.20 Moderately Knowledgeable
3 2.61 – 3.40 Somewhat Knowledgeable
2 1.81 – 2. 60 Slightly Knowledgeable
1 1.00 - 1.80 Least Knowledgeable

Problem No. 3 The available multimedia devices used in different topics in Asian
Studies were presented using the mode and Average Weighted Mean with multiple
response. The following scale was used to interpret the result.
Rating Scale Point Range Descriptive Equivalent
5 4.21 – 5.00 Very Highly Utilized
4 3.41 – 4.20 Highly Utilized
3 2.61 – 3.40 Moderately Utilized
2 1.81 – 2. 60 Less Utilized
1 1.00 - 1.80 Least Utilized
Problem No. 4 It focused on the extent of students’ participation in the classroom as a
result of the use of multimedia devices as perceived by students and teachers was
described in terms of its mode and Average Weighted Mean with corresponding
interpretations. The following scale was used to interpret the result.
Rating Scale Point Range Descriptive Equivalent
5 4.21 – 5.00 Highly Participated
4 3.41 – 4.20 Very Participated
3 2.61 – 3.40 Moderately Participated
2 1.81 – 2. 60 Fairly Participated
1 1.00 - 1.80 Rarely Participated
Problem No. 5 To determine the significant differences in the level of knowledge of the
teachers using computer across the teacher’s profile variables, MANOVA (Multivariate
Analysis of variance) were used.
