Origins and Nature of Physical Laws

This document discusses the history and development of physical laws, using Newton's laws of motion as a primary example. It describes how Newton's laws had incredible success in unifying other theories but were later shown to have limitations and be idealized approximations. The mechanistic worldview based on Newton's laws broke down with advances in relativity, quantum mechanics, and chaos theory that showed space and time are not absolute and the universe is not fully deterministic. The document concludes that while physical laws are very successful, they have limited ranges of applicability and worldviews based entirely on them can be disproven by future progress.

on Newton's laws

It was believed that the laws were directly obtained from nature

The properties of the laws were taken to be properties of nature

On the 300th anniversary of
Newton's Principia

„We are all deeply conscious today

that the enthusiasm of our forebears for the
marvellous achievements of Newtonian
mechanics led them to make
generalizations in this area of predictability
which (...) we now recognize were false. We
collectively wish to apologize for having
misled the general educated public by
spreading ideas (...) that, after 1960, were to
be proved incorrect...” .
