Introduction Time
Introduction We have been reading a lot of books on colors lately. Can someone 8 min
put up their hand and tell us one of the primary colors? What is
another color? And what is the last primary color?
Today we are going to be reading Cat’s Colors, by Jane Cabrera.
As we are reading this I want each of you to focus on the pictures in
this story, and how the colors have different colors inside of them.
Show example on the cover. Do you see how there is white mixed
in with the blue here on the cover? If white is mixed with the blue
does that make is lighter or darker? (Lighter) See if you can find
other examples in the book where colors are mixed together.
Questions: What color is cat? (Orange, black, get them to see the
yellow mixed in with the orange.) Does anyone see what color is
mixed with green? What does snooze mean? What color is mixed
with purple? (white.) Does that make it darker or lighter? (lighter).
Read story.
Now, when I say, I want everyone to quietly go to your desks.
There are some things at your tables but leave them alone until I
give you more instructions, because we don’t want them to rip.
Agenda Read story; send children back to their tables, walk them through
the art activity step by step. Tomorrow show them their finished
projects and discuss how the colors mixed in some areas to make
new colors.

Grade 1 eyes on me! (One two three) This is what min
we are going to be making today! Hold up my
example paper. What do you notice about the
colors? (They are all blended together, they’re not
separated they all combine) If they are struggling,
ask prompting questions: Are all the colors separate
and apart or are they kinds of blended together?
Notice how when primary colors are blended
together, they make secondary colors.
Grade One, everyone lay your paper on the desk in
front of you and fold it in half, like this and like it
shows on the screen. Use the stool to fold it along
with the students.
When you are done hold it up so I can see it.
Remember positive praise and encouragement.
Okay it looks like everyone is ready to go. Go to the
next slide. For the next step, we are going to fold it
in half again, like this. Demonstrate fold. When you
are done hold it up again so I can see. (If there is
time, ask what shape we have made.)
Okay, here is where we bring in colors. Go to next
slide. I want you to pick four colors from the
markers on your desk. Draw lines, squiggles, and
dots on your wedge, like this. Don’t color it all one
color. Can someone point out to me how the colors
are all organized on the wedge? Are all the colors
spread all over or are they grouped together?
(Grouped together.) I want you to do the same,
because that will show the mixing of colors more
clearly once we are finished. Make sure as you are
making your designs you are pressing hard to get
the ink through all the layers.
5 min
Give time for the students to color. Give reminders
of time limits.
Okay, once you have finished put your hand up, and
I will come spray it with water. Once I have sprayed
it, leave it on your table, it needs to dry overnight. If
you unfold it now it will rip.

Once you have finished I have another activity for
you to do.
Dismissal Bring students to their tables to dismiss for recess.

Reflection
The students were quite engaged with this activity. I placed paper towels underneath each filter
to prevent too much of a mess. I found that having the example of what to do with their coffee
filter displayed on the projector helped the students follow along quite well. Closer to the end of
the lesson, students wanted to see other students’ art pieces, and were beginning to be quite
active. I decided to organize a gallery walk, wherein the students went around the class in a
circular path to each table. I allowed them to determine how much time they spent at each table,
and they were all very respectful of others’ belongings. Overall, this lesson was a great success!
