Lesson Plan: Work, Energy, and Power

This lesson plan outlines a 60-minute science class on work, energy, and power for an 8th grade class in the Philippines. The objectives are for students to define and identify work, energy, and power, and relate work to real life situations. The lesson begins with a review of forces and motion. Students will then brainstorm what they know about work, energy, and power. They will discuss how work transfers energy and the relationships between work, energy, and power. An activity involves students calculating the energy expended and power output of individuals climbing stairs. Finally, students will demonstrate their understanding by discussing the activity's answers.

Instructional Lesson Plan in Science 8

Work, Energy, and Power

I- Objectives: During the 60 minutes session, students are expected to:

1. define work, energy, power;

2. Identify work, energy and power;

3. Relate work done into real life situation

Materials: Books, Chalk, Manila Paper, Pentel Pen and IMs

Date: August

Grade and Section: Grade 8 Lavoisier and Mendel

III- Procedure
A. Preparation

1. Prayer

2. Arranging of chairs

3. Checking of attendance and/or assignment and task.

B. Review and Drill

 The teacher will facilitate the students in activating responses to keep in

touch with the new lesson to be discussed prior to the previous topic about

forces and Motion.

Guided Questions:

 Do forces always result in motion?

 What are the conditions for an object to stay at rest, to keep moving at

constant velocity, or to move with increasing velocity?

 How is force related to acceleration?

C. Actual Lesson/Proper Discussion with related Activities

1. Knowledge

Direction: The teacher will ask a question on what the students knew so far

about “work” A follow up question will follow after a midst the discussion on work.

Questions:
What is work?
What is energy?
How are work, energy, and power related?
2. Process
Initiated Discussion and Output Making
Work is a way transferring energy. Energy is the capacity to do work. When work is

done by an object it loses energy and when work is done it gains energy.
Work is done on an object when the force applied to it covers to it a distance in the

direction of the applied [Link] is a way of transferring energy. When work is done

on an object it gains energy. The energy of an object enables it to do work. A moving

object has energy called energy of motion. An object above a specified level has energy

due to its position called potential energy. Power is the rate of doing work or the rate of

using energy.
Directions: After the first activity, the students will be grouped into five for an
initiated discussion.

They will answers and solve the Activity given:

1. Who among the group members had the highest power output?

2. What is the highest power output?

3. Who among the group members had the lowest power output?

4. What is the lowest power output?

5. What can you say about the work done by each member of the group?

did each member perform the same amount of work in climbing the stairs?
6. What factors determined the highest/lowest power output?

3. Understanding
Directions:
The students have learned significant lesson on Work, Power and Energy.

In this activity, they are tasked to discussed their answer in the front. (one

representative in each group)

Guided Question:

Solve the energy expended by each member. Record them in your manila

paper.

Compute for the power output of each member.
