This is a news article announcing the FTC is going to give subpoenas to 44 companies to

disclose their marketing practices for children and teenagers. They will investigate packaging

promotions, in-store marketing events, vilial marketing, and guerrilla marketing. They will also see if

the foods advertised to children are healthy for them. The FTC's report to congress could suggest that

advertising practices need to be regulated because of childhood obesity.

This is a restaurant newspaper article that is informing the public that FTC is going to

investigate the marketing practices of the fast food industry that are meant for children and teenagers.

Their results could determine whether litigation is necessary.

This article was published in the “The restaurant News,” volume 41, issue 19 and was written

by Gregg Cebrzynski. Although written in 2007, it tells of an event that is relevant to my research

topic.

I will use this article in my paper to discuss fast food litigation and childhood obesity.

This article is a study on the relationship between the number of restaurants in an area and the

percentage of obese people, by gender, in advanced economies. The study reveals that countries, such

as the United States and Canada, that have a higher number of Subway Restaurants in the area tend to

have a higher percentage of obesity in both men and women. Countries, such as Japan and Norway,

that do not have a lot of Subway Restaurants tend to have less obesity in both men and women. The

study found a definite relationship between the number of fast food outlets in a given area and an

increase in obesity.

This article was written to inform the public that there is a link between obesity and fast food.

The study also includes countries outside of the United States. It is saying that obesity has become a

global issue in advanced economies where the people are enjoying fast food restaurants.

This article was published in “Critical Public Health,” December 21, volume21, issue 4. The

study was done by Roberto De Vogli, Anne Kourvonam, and David Gemino.It was published in 2011

and is an event I feel is relevant to my research.

I will use this article to show that fast food being linked to obesity is a global concern.

This article gives both a background and an update on the outcomes of these lawsuits. It discusses
improvements made within the last decade that were influenced by these cases. The author, Noel

Diem, states “that the debate on obesity litigation will still go on even as more states are pushing

toward a ban on obesity lawsuits.

This article is updating the public about fast food industries' obesity lawsuits. This article was

published in the on-line journal “Law Street” on June 6, 2015. The author's name is Noel Diam. He

has provided many resources and a contact address.

This article is relevant to my paper because it is a recently published article and has information

on my research topic. It will provide more up-to-date information on my topic.

This article ask the question, “What is the best way to deal with lawsuits that allege that the cause of a

person's obesity is eating at fast food restaurants on a regular bases?” According to the author, “there

is not enough proof that fast food was the cause of their obesity issues in these cases.

The author is talking to the general public. The article is found in “ the Journal of Food, Law

and Policy,” Volume 10, Issue 2, p.281, Fall 2014. I found it in the Sinclair Online Library. The

author's name is Mary Hoshall Hodges. I believe it is a credited article because partly because it was

found in the Sinclair Online Library and partly because the publisher is The University of Arkansas

School of Law.
I believe it is relevant to my research because it is a more recent article on the side that Fast

Food Restaurants are deserving of Obesity Lawsuits.

This is a study on whether the amount of restaurants in a given area has an effect on the percentage of

obesity. The area they studied had a population of more educated and prosperous people. Their study

concluded that in these type neighborhood, restaurants did not have an effect on the percentage of

obesity.

The authors, Mohsen Mazidi and John R. Speakman wanted to inform the public on whether or

not the fast food industry can be linked to obesity. Their results surprised them. They did not find a

link between obesity and the restaurant industry.

This article was published in the “American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.” Volume 106, Issue

2, August 2017, pp.603-613. This is a well known journal and there are a good amount of references

provided.

I will use this article to show a similar study on the density of restaurants in an area and their

link to obesity. Unlike the globalization study, the results did not find a link to obesity. This is good

article to be able to show both sides of the story.

Eric Schossar is giving the history of the fast food industry in his book “Fast Food Nation: The Dark
side of the All – American Meal. “

The author wants to inform the public how fast food started and some of the problems in the

fast food industry. One of these issues is contributing to the obesity epidemic.

This book was written in 2001 but has an updated afterward written in 2012. The book is also

an international best seller and has a bibliography. The author is also well known.

This book has information relevant to my topic. I will use it for background information. The

afterwards also gives the news of some of the changes taken place over the last decade.

Super Size Me. Directed by Morgan Spurlock. Kathburn Pictures, 2004.

“Super Size Me” is a documentary film. Actor, Morgan Spurlock, eats only McDonald's food

for thirty days during this time doctors monitor the effects this routine has on his physical and mental

health.

The film is informing people that the fast food industry is selling food that could lead people into

health issues.

This film was first released in 2004. This year was the start of obesity lawsuits. Morgan

Spurlock also directed the film.

This film has information on my topic.
