Experts all over the world have estimated that in next 20 years demand for plastics will
double and more the generation of plastic, more the damage to our landfills and water
bodies. This is a wakeup call for each one of us to reduce plastic usage thereby cutting
down the overall demand caused by it
The increase in quantum of solid waste is proportional to an increase in population,
developmental activities, changes in lifestyles and socio-economic conditions. Plastic
waste generation in India amounts to a significant proportion. As per a report by the
Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) 56 lakh tonnes account for plastic waste or
about 9% of the total waste (62 million tonnes) India generates in a year. Believe it or
not but India is one the world’s biggest plastic polluters as nearly 40 per cent of its
plastic ends up either in landfills or water bodies.
While countries like France, Rwanda, Sweden have brought in strict laws banning all
kinds of plastic usage and Kenya is imposing world’s toughest law (imprisonment of up
to four years or fines of Rs. 25 lakh for purchasing, selling or using plastic bags, India is
yet to bring in a central law on the same. At present states have their own laws on
plastic bags after the National Green Tribunal suggested a ban on disposable plastic
like cutlery, bags and other plastic items.
1) BYOB- An Environmentally Sound Slang BYOB basically stands for ‘Bring Your
Own Bag’.make a switch to alternatives like cloth bags, jute bags or eco-friendly bags
made out of natural starches and vegetable wastes instead of plastic bag
2) Throw A Plastic Free Party The world is a victim of ‘use and throw’ cheap plastic
cutleries spoons, plates, cups, bowls, glasses are usually bought in bulk as these are
dirt cheap and add to the pile up of non-biodegradable trash go the traditional way and
use banana leaves to serve food, use steel glasses, bowls and spoons or simply serve
finger foods that don’t require utensils.
3) Break Away From The Shackles Of Plastic Packaging Foods packed in plastic
materials are a major concern environmentally When buying fruits or vegetables loose
ite packaging when ordering online.4) Switch From Bottled Water nearly 38.5 million
plastic bottles are consumed every day all over the world Plastic bottles take 450 years
to decompose. Always carry a bottle or a glass jar and refill it whenever possible
5) Stay Away From ‘Use And Throw’ Plastics Pens, yogurt cups, ketchup pouches,
etc are items which are used only once and then discarded. these may take anything
from 6 months to 10 years to decompose. The Plastic pollution affects both land and
water bodies. The marine life is severely hampered due to the Plastic pollution that
involves ingestion of the plastic products by the marine organisms or exposure of the
harmful chemicals of the plastic that affects the physiological structure of the aquatic
organisms. Thus, to avoid the severe effects of plastic pollution, the consumers
should be aware of using those harmful plastics. in the current year’s World
Environment Day, a significant awareness program against the usage of plastics had
been conducted by UNESCO.
Say no to Plastic Bags
-. People go empty handed to the shops and return with loads of plastic bags. - Plastic
bags were mostly made of 'polyethylene' which is made out of petroleum. If you find the
words PE on any plastic bag, be sure that it was made out of Polyethylene. Petroleum as
we know is a limited natural resource, which can be exhausted if used irrationally.
Besides, numerous toxic chemicals were released while manufacturing the Polyethylene.
The plastic bags left as a garbage would severely affect the wild life. Stray dogs and cows
would eat them along with the food left in them. Marine creatures would mistake them to
be jelly fish and consume them. Even the sea birds and turtles also eat the pieces of
plastic bags thinking them to be of some kind of prey. Such an intake is almost fatal to
creatures either instantly or in the long run.
The garbage of plastic bags is the main culprit for blocking the drainage systems. They
would just gather at the sewage blocking the flow of water. When floods storm the cities,
plastic bags were found to aggravate the disasters by locking up the flood waters. - As
the plastic bags take centuries to degenerate, they slowly break into synthetic granules.
The soil containing the carry bags would certainly be polluted. Besides, the granules
would get mixed with ground water. The plants would grow on such land and the animals
would feed on such plants. So! After a few decades, the synthetic granules would become
a part of the food chain!
Its damn easy to say no plastic bags. Keep a bag made out of jute or cotton with you.
Don't insist for a plastic bag if you don't need one. If you have purchased a single
commodity, carry it by hand. Don't throw away the old plastic bags carelessly. Whenever
you wish to depend on a plastic bag, be aware of the fact that it would be for centuries
together on the earth. So let's keep our earth clean!
Beat Plastic Pollution – this is the theme of this year’s World Environment Day and India
is the host country. Plastic pollution is the massive accumulation of plastic products that
have an adverse effect on each and every component of the environment. From trees to
human beings, wild animals to small insects – all are the components of this
environment. The careless and frivolous usage of plastic affects our life
[Link] is really cheap and durable and these are the two factors that make
it one of the most used material. The way plastic has made a place in every sphere of
our living, it is really hard to think of a plastic-less life. From grocery to wedding
arrangements – you would see a humungous usage of plastic in various forms. As per a
report shared by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), our India is one the
biggest plastic polluters in the world. At least 40% plastic consumption of Indian
population ends up either in landfills or water bodies. Thus, given the current statistics
of plastic pollution, we have to wake up now and take sustainable actions before its too
late!
Some Facts about Plastic Pollution:
The world usage of Plastic bags across the world is 500 billion.
In the oceans worldwide, the plastic waste found is at least 8 million tonnes.
50% of the plastic that we all use are disposable or meant for single-use.
The annual sale of plastic bottles is 1 million.
The last decade (2007-2017) saw an intolerable usage of plastic. The production of
the plastic world over was more than that of the whole last century (19 th century)
Plastic makes up 10% of the waste we generate. The figure may be small but it is
like a slow poison which would eat up every corner of our happy life!
Now if you think that just removing plastic from your home and office to some Municipal
Garbage Bin is enough – you are probably living in a bubble. When this plastic waste
material is dumped into the ocean, it affects the marine environment too by polluting the
water and killing marine organisms. Here are some easy and effective measures that
you can adopt to say a NO to plastic usage and make a difference. Choose Cardboard
over Plastic: It is always safe to use cardboard because it easily gets recycled. The
cardboard is a paper product but it is always recommended because it is bio-
degradable in nature. So, buy food or other essentials which are delivered in cardboard
packaging.
Discard Some Cosmetics: If a clean plastic drive gets initiated, the cosmetic industry
would be wiped off to a considerable extent Most of the plastic that has already polluted
or still polluting the ocean are microplastics. You have the Ayurvedic or Herbal products
too in the market and you can use them. Check your products have polypropylene and
Plastic in any form or of any quality is harmful to health, period. In a perfect world
you would want to avoid exposure to all forms of plastic. Considering plastic lurks
in every nook and corner of our lives, banishing it completely seems unrealistic
and impractical.
But we can start with more awareness about the little ways with which we can
reduce our exposure to plastic. This can go a long way in reducing toxicity,
hormonal imbalance, cancer, infertility, PCOS, obesity and acidosis. If you have
plastic water filters, make a change and switch to matkas or clay pots. They are
perfect for summer and naturally purify the water too. Traditional India ate out of
stainless steel, copper, metal, banana leaf, clay, wooden plates and that’s how it
should be. Change your tiffin boxes right now! For kids, stainless steel is safer.
Minimise food takeaways and home delivery services because we have no control
over the type of plastic they use. Most organic and farmers’ markets offer dry
ration in paper, cartons or cloth bags. But if you are buying groceries from a local
shop, transfer all that comes in plastic packets and bottles (eg: cooking oils, dals,
spices, rice, flours) into glass, steel or clay jars as soon as it reaches your
kitchen. If you purchase something bottled in glass, clean it and reuse it.
Avoid drinking hot liquids in styrofoam cups or plastic cups. When hot liquid goes
into them there are chemicals being leached into that drink. Instead, opt for bone -
china, glass cups, mason jars or bring your own cup. The so-called ‘wrinkle free’
fabrics are not safe and contain Teflon, which is a kind of plastic. Teflon -coated
non-stick cookware should be banned in your kitchen.
Each year an estimated 1-million sea birds and over 100,000 marine mammals die from
ingesting plastic. Single use plastic bags end up in our landfills and take over 500 years
to decompose. Many of these bags end up in our rivers and streams, which ultimately
lead to our oceans. Sea Birds and Sea Turtles mistake these bags floating in our
oceans as jellyfish and they eat them. The bags block the digestive system preventing
the animal from eating so they literally starve to death. OMG founders just launched
our “Plastic Awareness” Coalition in Georgia so we can fight for a solution in our
communities and our state. So far we have attracted the support of the following
organizations: GA Tech Surf Club, Atlanta Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation,
Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church Environmental Committee, Atlanta The
average shopper uses over 500 single use shopping bags each year. Less than 5% of
the single use plastic bags ever get recycled only solution is to stop using the bags and
consider a complete Plastic Bag Ban or fee program like many countries are already
doing.
Step 1. – Engaging the public: Step 2. – Forming Connections: Step 3. – Working
with Local Council Members:
Ambitious The Bagtree - A zero waste campaign against use of plastic organised by
Thanal and Zero Waste Centre in Trivandrum, Kerala - 25th September 2012
we have evolved in such a way that we heavily rely on synthetic for everything in daily
life. CAP calls for more rigorous implementation of existing prohibitions on plastic bags.
We also need nation-wide ban on plastic bags as implemented in several countries. For
example in Rwanda, it is illegal to import, produce, use or sell plastic bags and plastic
packaging, except within specific industries like hospitals and [Link]
tough ban on plastic bags in Kenya since August 2017 has been successful in cleaning
up the country, so much so that other east African nations Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi
and South Sudan are considering following suit. In China a ban on thin plastic bags has
led to a 60-80% reduction in their use in supermarkets. In Denmark and Finland the
average annual consumption of lightweight plastic bags is 4 per person!
Life without plastic bags is possible, as observed in countries that have imposed
strict bans. There is no excuse! It is time we get rid of single-use plastic bags for good!

1111 We all are aware of how much our natural environment is getting
cluttered and is already on the verge of losing its balance owing to the so-called
modernization and development. The increasing use of resources and polluting agents
have disturbed the natural form of the ecosystem, inflicting damage to the living
organisms and the planet. The on-the-go lifestyle of people today is demanding more
and more of disposable products, contributing a lot to the amount of garbage produced
on daily basis. One of the primary culprits of this is plastic, which causes great harm to
the environment and is the major contributor to the rising levels of land pollution.
Q.1 Why must we stop using plastic bags? A.1 We must stop using plastic bags as
they cause land pollution, water pollution, and soil pollution. They cause the death of
several animals as well. Q.2 How can one say no to plastic bags? A.2 It is easy to quit
using plastic bags. We must carry our own cloth or paper bags when shopping. Moreover,
we must not accept plastic bags from shopkeepers which will discourage them from using
them in the first place.
We are literally living in a plastic world. A recent research estimates show that around 2
million plastic bags are used every minute around the world, with less than 3% being
recycled globally. A 2014 UNEP (United Nations Environment Program) report estimates
about10 to 20 million tons of plastic finding its way into the world’s oceans each year.
Plastic bags are a big threat to our environment, because a single plastic bag takes 1000
hours to decay completely as they are made of petrochemicals which are nonrenewable..
In the ocean, there are 46,000 pieces of plastic per square mile. The Great Pacific
Garbage Patch is located in the North Pacific Gyre off the coast of California and is the
largest ocean garbage site in the world, it’s twice the size of Texas! Sadly, the pieces of
plastic are outnumbering sea life in the ratio of 6:1. We are sitting on a big time bomb
called plastic.
Let’s take an oath in this New Year to gradually get rid of our plastic addiction. Let us
start using reusable baskets and reusable tote bags, let us curb the need for plastic bags.
There are innovative people out there, who already have smart solutions for everything.
