ET2208 Computer Network 1: Exercise#2

This document outlines an assignment on computer networking concepts. It includes 6 sections asking students to: 1) Explain MAC addresses, CSMA protocols, and networking devices; 2) Design a VLSM addressing scheme for company divisions; 3) Explain router forwarding methods; 4) Analyze fragmented packet header fields; 5) Explain ARP address resolution process; and 6) Describe how ICMP works for ping and traceroute tools. The assignment aims to test students' understanding of fundamental networking technologies and protocols.

ET2208 Computer Network 1

Exercise#2
Submission Deadline: Monday, 14 October 2019
===================================================

1) Underlying Technologies
a) Explain the MAC address format
b) Explain how the mechanism of CSMA/CD and CSMA/CA when encounter a collision or prevent
a collision to happen.
c) Explain the characteristics of the following networking devices:
1. Hub
2. Bridge
3. Switch
4. Router
5. L3 Switch

2) Subnetting and VLSM

A local ISP is given a pool of IPv4 address by IANA. One of its addresses is [Link]/26. This
company has 4 divisions needed to be assigned separate sub-smaller networks which are:
 Operation division (15 hosts)
 Maintenance division (8 hosts)
 Marketing Division (6 hosts)
 Human Resource Division (2 hosts)
As a network engineer of this company, you are asked to design the addressing scheme of its
divisions by using VLSM technique efficiently.
For guideline, identify the following for each division:
a) Prefix length and subnet mask
b) Subnet/network address
c) Broadcast address
d) Number of usable host address
e) First and last usable host address

3) Network Layer
There are three methods used by a router to forward an incoming packet. Explain those three
methods and put them in the correct order of preference
 Lowest administrative distance
 Longest match prefix
 Lowest metric

4) IPv4 Protocol (Fragmentation)

a) A packet has arrived with an M bit value of 0. Is this the first fragment, the last fragment, or a
middle fragment? Do we know if the packet was fragmented?
b) A packet has arrived with an M bit value of 1. Is this the first fragment, the last fragment, or a
middle fragment? Do we know if the packet was fragmented?
c) A packet has arrived with an M bit value of 1 and a fragmentation offset value of zero. Is this
the first fragment, the last fragment, or a middle fragment?
d) A packet has arrived in which the offset value is 100. What is the number of the first byte? Do
we know the number of the last byte?
e) A packet has arrived in which the offset value is 100, the value of HLEN is 5 and the value of
the total length field is 100. What is the number of the first byte and the last byte?

5) ARP
A host with IP address [Link] and physical address [Link] has a packet to send
to another host with IP address [Link] and physical address [Link] (which is
unknown to the first host). The two hosts are on the same Ethernet network. Explain the following
illustration about ARP process, how ARP can resolve a targeted MAC address. Explain the ARP
request and reply packets as well.

6) ICMP
PING and TRACEROUTE are the most useful debugging/troubleshooting tools which are used in
TCP/IP network. Explain how ICMP protocol works in PING and TRACEROUTE process.
