Usage of ‘a’ / ‘an’


 A is used before singular common nouns that begin with a
consonant sound.
For example: a car, a duck, a bat, a tin
 An is used before singular common nouns that begin with a
vowel sound.
For example: an axe, an eagle, an inkpot
 Sometimes a word that begins with the letter E or U has a “y”
sound at the beginning. In such cases we use a.
For example: a university, a union , a European
 The letter H is silent in some words which begin with that letter.
Hence, H is not sounded and the first sound is a vowel. In such
cases we use an.
For example: an hour, an honest man, an honorary Vice President.

Usage of ‘the’

The is used –
 With Singular and Plural nouns
 For example: the boy in the park, the cars we saw
 Before names of rivers
o For example: the Nile, the Brahamaputra
 Before names of mountains and mountain ranges
o For example: the Himalayas, the Andes
 Before names of famous buildings
For example: the Taj Mahal, the Red Fort
 Before names holy books and newspapers
For example: the Bible, the Times of India
 Before names of things which are one of their kind
For example: the Sun, the Earth
 When we refer to a noun in the previous sentence
For example: I borrowed a book from the library. The book is full of
pictures.
 Before nationalities
For example: the English, the French
 Before musical instruments
For example: the violin , the flute
