Technical Data Sheet: Procedure API 11A4.1

This procedure calculates the liquid viscosity of petroleum fractions at low pressure and temperature given an experimental viscosity measurement at 100°F. It uses a correlation to predict viscosity as a function of temperature. As an example, it calculates the viscosity of a petroleum fraction at 212°F given its viscosity of 112.06 cSt at 100°F. The method is best for light, paraffinic fractions with API gravities over 30 degrees but degrades for heavier fractions.

1 Technical data sheet

Correlation for the liquid viscosity of petroleum fractions at low pressure
This procedure can be used to calculate the liquid viscosity of petroleum fiactions at
1°. Use to:
temperature and low pressure given an experimental viscosity at 100 F.
2°. Definition: For definitions view API - Petroleum Refining Technical Data Book pags 11-33 to 11-34.
This Procedure is a correlation for predicting the liquid viscosity of petroleum fraction
3° Purpose:
function of temperature at low pressure from a measured viscosity at 100 F.
4°. Input Data
Kinematic Viscosity 1: 112.06 cSt @ 100 F 559.67
Temperature = 212 F 671.67 R
5° Calculations and results
5.1 Determine B from Equation 11A4.1-2, and S from 11A4.1-3
B= 2.91904
S= 2.43561

5.2 Use Equation 11A4.1-1, to calculate the viscosity at temperature requested

v= 10.0530 cSt @ 212 F

The method works best for light, paraffinic fractions with API gravities in excess of 30
6° Remarks:
degrees API. The method degrades substantially form much heavier fractions.
