Oman Bottled Water Quality Study

This study analyzed and compared the chemical composition and quality of locally produced and imported bottled water brands sold in Oman. The results found that all brands complied with local and international water quality standards. Through various analysis methods, the study grouped the Omani and UAE brands based on their similar chemical makeups and found that some brands had the same composition but were marketed differently. The calcium levels in the local brands were lower than imported mineral waters and contributed little to daily calcium recommendations. Both local brands also met the US FDA's standards for very low sodium content, making them suitable for low-sodium diets.

ABSTRACT

In this study quality of Omani and United Arab Emirates bottled water brands sold in Oman were
assessed by comparing the chemical composition indicated on manufacturer’s label with local and
international bottled water standards. Results indicated that all the bottled water brands are complying
with local and international standards. According to piper diagram, the most dominant water type among
Omani brands is mixed Ca 2+-Mg2+-Cl- and among UAE brands is calcium chloride. HCA divided Omani
and UAE brands in to four groups based on similarity in chemical composition. Some of the Omani and
UAE brands have same chemical composition, but marketed under different names. Calcium
concentration in Omani and UAE brands is low compared to imported mineral water brands, and their
contribution towards recommended dietary allowances of calcium for adults is only 3 %. Both Omani
and UAE brands used in this study are meeting United States food and drug administration’s very low
sodium category requirements and are suitable for individuals on severely restricted Na diet.
