FOREWORD

This Indian SUndUd ( Second Revision ) was ndopted by the Rureilu of Indinn StimdiUds, ‘nfter the d&t
finalized by the Alloy Steels and Special Steels Sectional Committee had been approved by the Metallurgical
Engineering Division Council.

This stilnd:Ud wns first published in 1969 and revised in 1978. On the basis of experience gained in the
production ‘anduse of steels, it has been decided to revise the standard again. The following major modifications
have been incorporated in this revision:
A few new grndes such as, 42CrV-6, SOCr4V2,58Cr4Vl, 49MnVS3, 37Mn5SiS,55Si603 and 45CrSi9
hilve been introduced.
CUbon and Molybdenum content in 4OCr4Mo3 grade have been limited to make it cost effective imd better
responsive to induction hardening.

The revision hiIs been carried to make the specification more quality-oriented for which il few tests such
iB, step ~OWII tCSt, blue fraclure lest, milgt~etic paaicle test, etc, have been introduced.
Many new clituses have been introduced and existing &uses suitably modified to m&e the stimditrd
complete in itself.
For the purpose of deciding whether n p;micul;u requirement of this standnrd is complied with, the tinti
due, observed or cnlculilted, expressing the result of it test or nnalysis, shall be rounded off in
accordance with IS 2 : 1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised ) ‘. The number of
signiticnnt plnces retnined in the rounded off value should be the same us that of the specified vnlue in
this Stillld~Ud.
