Lebanon's Path to Zero Waste

Lebanon generates too much waste, with only 48% going to landfills and small percentages being composted or recycled. A zero-waste strategy aims to prevent waste, promote reuse, and optimize separate waste collection to improve recycling. Recycling maintains an item's original shape and value, while downcycling converts items into lower value products. Technology has improved recycling rates through automated waste collection, route optimization, and landfill modernization to enhance safety, reduce emissions, and provide quicker service.

Introduction

Too much waste is generated in Lebanon. Of this, only 48% goes to the
landfills; 15% composted; 8% is recycled, and most of it down cycled into
products and materials of lower value than the original ones .

Zero Waste Lebanon

A zero-waste strategy is based on an ambitious waste prevention policy,
proactive reuse and optimized separate collection of waste at source to
guarantee quality recycling. By reducing the amount of waste sent to
landfills, zero waste strategies are faster to implement, cheaper to operate,
and safer for the environment. All in all, a zero-waste strategy is about
involving the community in the management of their own resources and
making it cheaper and more convenient for citizens to do the right thing.

Types of recycling
 Product recycling maintaining its shape, texture and its high value
after maintains or development and reuse for the same purposes or
otherwise.
 Product recycling after disassembly and assigning its components
and parts for the production and collection process and this kind is
considered less valuable than previous one

Waste Paper and Cardboard

Industry and commerce dispose of
approximately 8.5 million tonnes of paper and
cardboard in the UK each year! Every tonne of
recycled cardboard saves 17 trees, 2 cubic
yards of landfill capacity and 4100 Kw/hours of
electricity!
Plastic Recycling
There are about 50 different groups of plastics,
with hundreds of different varieties. Most types
of plastic are recyclable. Because most
plastics are non-degradable, they take a long
time to break down, possibly up to hundreds of
years - although no-one knows for certain as
plastics haven't existed for long enough.

Metal Recycling
All grades of metal can be recycled for future
use. Before it is recycled, metals are sorted
into ferrous and non-ferrous types. Ferrous
metal includes Iron and Steel, non-ferrous
includes aluminum, copper, stainless-steel,
brass and lead to name but a few.

Wood Recycling
ISM can recycle all types of uncontaminated
timber. Grades include such items as timber
pallets, timber boxes, floorboards, chipboard,
fencing, plywood, furniture etc.
Transformation in the waste management industry
Improved Recycling Rates

Recycling and waste management companies are investing in improving

their tools and techniques. The recent development in single-stream
recycling where people can dump all the trash in one bin has reduced the
sorting burden on people and drastically improved the rate of recycling.
This has also reduced the truck count and ultimately the emissions as well.

Automated Waste Collection

Technology has transformed the way waste management works with

automated sensors that trigger instant alerts every time a container is full
and needs service. Other innovative tools that are making the sorting
process fast and easy include optical sorters, magnets and advanced disk
screens. The trucks have also switched from diesel to natural gas for
quieter and cost-effective operations. The use of logistics software, in-
vehicle monitors, and mobile apps has further simplified the waste
management process while ensuring driver safety.

Route Optimization

Optimal routing is essential to protecting the environment and reducing

hazardous emissions which is why companies are investing in advanced
systems and optimization software. They are now employing automated
trucks that are installed with robotic arms for saving time and effort along
existing routes. Technology has made point-to-point pickups eco-friendly
and financially viable while improving energy-efficiency.

Landfill Modernization

Harnessing the power of science and scale, the waste management

industry has modernized garbage dumps. Highly engineered landfills that
comply with federal and state regulations ensure complete protection of
human health and the surrounding environment. Solar panel systems
integrated with geomembrane are facilitating the production of sustainable
energy while preventing carbon from re-entering the environment.

Enhanced Safety
Recycling and waste management companies are making consistent
efforts to improve safety which is of prime importance to an industry
running several 30-ton trucks through residential areas. All of their drivers
are subjected to rigorous training at designated facilities to reduce the rate
of accidents and injuries.

Quick Turnaround Times

Bigger waste management companies have also invested in feature-rich

customer-facing technology. They are leveraging user-friendly mobile apps
to facilitate prompt service, extra pickups and bill payment through push
notifications. Technology has greatly reduced the complexity and cost of
modern day waste management systems making them all the more
efficient, safer and productive while reducing their environmental impact.

What is Plastic Recycling

Plastic recycling is the process of recovering different types of plastic
material in order to reprocess them into varied other products, unlike their
original form. An item made out of plastic is recycled into a different
product, which usually cannot be recycled again.
