Lessons-Learned Report
Date: January 13, 2018
Project Name: Modular Look Kitchen Renovation Project
Project Sponsor: Alphy Siby
Project Manager: Jude J. Fernandes
Project Dates: October 10,2017 to December 01, 2017
Final Budget: $65,000 CAD
1) Did the project meet scope, time, and cost goals?
Scope Management: Scope of the project were to create a kitchen with unique features
which gave a unique and desirable experience. And we could meet all the requirements
and were able to apply all the latest technology available.
Time Management: The time frame of the project was October 10, 2017 to December
01, 2017 and we were able to complete the project within the timeframe as we decided.
When it was completed the renovated kitchen was a wonderful one with all the amazing
features that one would like to have in their kitchen.
Cost Management: Our primary budget was $65,000 which was approved by the client
and we were able to complete the project using that amount. When the strike came up we
thought we cannot complete it within the budgeted amount, but later when we resume we
were able to complete it within the estimated cost.
2) What was the success criteria listed in the project scope statement?
Success Criteria: When this project is completed we would create a kitchen with unique
features which will give the user a unique and desirable experience and to meet all the
requirements of the project sponsor giving a furnished appearance. Once the renovation
over we should be able to finish without any defects or any complaints from the project
sponsor.
3) Reflect on whether you met the project success criteria.
As per the success criteria and the project objective we will be trying to apply the best
quality equipment and technology in the kitchen to give a furnished look and to meet all
the requirements of the project sponsor. The criteria were to complete the renovation by
adding unique features which will give unique and desirable experience for the kitchen.
We did meet all the requirements and desire of the project sponsor even though there
were some unforeseen circumstances came up at the last minute due to the strike by the
labors and the project was paused for some time and then resumed. We thought for the
completion of the project it will take more time, but everything was fine, and we were
able to complete it in time.
4) What were the main lessons your team learned from this project?
Throughout the project out team learned so many things during the process of execution,
monitoring and controlling. Some of the main lessons are as follows:
Regular Meeting: Regular meeting and a good communication between the team
members is something very important while doing a project to achieve the
objectives of the project. It is very important to be in touch with the team
members to know how the project is working and to know about the status of the
project. A good communication between the members will help to get new ideas
during the execution of the project and if some unforeseen circumstances occur to
find an alternative solution. Regular meeting is very important to know about the
working of the project and to decide what more is required in each stage of the
process. So, from this project we studied that the communication between the
members together with the regular meeting of the team is very important.
Team work: Another important lesson learned is the importance of the team
members in the project. All the team members are important in throughout the
first stage of the project and everyone play a significant role during the project.
So, every team member has a crucial role during the project.
5) Describe two examples of what went right on this project.
Planning: The project planning is the important aspect for the completion of the
project. Because the success of the project depends on the project plan. So, it is
important to look for all the minor detail while planning a project. In this case
project planning was right and the whole process went according to it and we
were able to complete the project within the fixed time frame with the estimated
cost.
Selection of the equipment: The selection of the equipment for the kitchen was a
right choice. The new kitchen is set upped with the latest modular equipment and
technology. It includes the technologies such as automated opening drawers and
cabinets, waterproof furniture, motion sensor lights, a powerful exhaust and an
oven, fridge and dishwasher built within the furniture which will give it a more
neater finish.
6) Describe two examples of what went wrong on this project.
Planning Phase Mistake: In the beginning of the planning stage of the project to
give a different experience we tried to include many things such as some plants in
the kitchen and to make all the equipment, the floor and the wall to be in white.
But it was a bad idea to make everything in white because in such a case the
kitchen will be found as dirty with a small dirt and it won’t be appealing. Also,
the client does not want her kitchen to be in full white color.
Strike: There was an unexpected strike which might have hanged all the planning
about the cost and time of the project. The worst thing was there were no any
backup plans as it was something unexpected. And we were not able to convince
the workers to work during those days.
7) What will you do differently on the next project based on your
experience working on this project?
Every project that will be assigned to our team will be different in every aspect but still
there are some things which we can improve in all the projects that are assigned to us
such as planning the project according to the preferences of the client. Make sure that all
the decisions and the designs that are going to be used in the project is approved by the
client. Even if it is small thing to avoid the last-minute alteration and to prevent the
unwanted expense. Also, to anticipate all the possibilities that may occur during the
project which will affect the execution of the project and a backup plan will be made for
everything.
Most importantly we will try to be close to some suppliers who can provide as all the
equipment and necessities that we need during different project execution with different
varieties. These are some of the things that we will do differently in our next project.
