2 - Disaster Risk Khalispur

The document discusses disaster risk reduction in residential buildings in Dhaka North City Corporation. It contains a survey for structural engineers on potential disaster risks like earthquakes, excessive tilting, concrete damage, and collapse. Reasons for risks include unplanned urbanization, lack of professional design/oversight, and lack of safety measures. Suggested options to reduce risks include following building codes, using proper foundations, marking utility lines, considering seismic and temperature loads in analysis and design.

SURVEY QUESTIONS

ON
DISASTER RISK REDUCTION IN RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS: AN ASSESSMENT IN
DHAKA NORTH CITY CORPORATION (DNCC)

For Structural Engineer

1. In your opinion, what might be the disaster risks for residential building in DNCC:

Serial No Disaster Risks in Residential Buildings Remarks

1 Excessive earthquakes caused extensive

damage to the foundation
2 The building tilts excessively

3 Confined and end concrete bursts

4 Excessive deflection causes the concrete to

crack
5 Develops hinges at the junction of columns
and beams
6 If the deflection level is higher than its
capacity the building collapses
7 Excessive temperature causes the concrete
to lose its efficiency and the building to
collapse
Other Losses

8 Many people died and many people were

injured. The breadwinner of the family
dies. Other members of the family live
miserable lives.
9 The number of patients in the hospital
increased as a result of many people being
injured.

10 The roads and communication system were

severely damaged.

11 Electricity supply was cutoff.

12 The drainage system collapsed.

13 Massive damage to vehicles caused.

14 The Gas supply system was cutoff

15 Another buildings was damaged from the

collapsed building.
16 Extensive damage was done to many
assets

2. In your opinion, what might be the reasons for disaster risks in residential
building at DNCC:

Serial No Reasons for Disaster Risks

Manmade Hazards

1 Unplanned urbanization of Dhaka city: increase of rainfall induced

flood vulnerability and the trend of unplanned urbanization that is
one of the major causes of water logging in Dhaka City.

2 Explosions

3 Fires

4 The release of toxic Chemicals or radioactive materials

5 Building Collapse

6 Breaks in water, gas, sewer

7 Blast from air conditioner, Electrical and Kitchen accessories.

Natural Hazards

Wednesday, September 30, 2020 2 5

1 Massive Earthquake

2 Floods

3 Strong wind

4 Excessive Temperature Changes, Temperature rise and fall

3. Do you think that the land owners or developers design their residential
buildings by professional architect or engineers:
Most people do (80-100%)
Some people do (60-80%)
√ Few people do (40-60%)
Very few people do (less than 40%)
Don't do

4. While designing the residential buildings, do you think that the designers follow
BNBC, Imarat Nirman Bidimala-2008, Fire Safety Regulations, RAJUK/DAP Guidelines
etc:
√ Most designers follow (80-100%)
Some designers follow (60-80%)
Few designers follow (40-60%)
Very few designers follow (less than 40%)
Don't follow

5. During the construction of residential buildings, do you think that the land owners
or developers follow 100% design-drawings which are vetted by RAJUK/DAP/DNCC:
Most people follow (80-100%)
√ Some people follow (60-80%)
Few people follow (40-60%)
Very few people follow (less than 40%)
Don't follow

6. Do you think that the residential buildings have adequate safety arrangements
against disasters like earthquake, fire, thunder lightening etc:
Yes
√ No

7. In your opinion, what might be the options to reduce disaster risks in residential
buildings at DNCC:

Ser No Remarks

1. Floor Area Ratio (FAR) shall be followed for the determinations

of the buildings height and Maximum Ground Coverage area
following the rules of the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakkha
(RAJUK).
2. The buildings rest on the either shallow or depth foundations. It is
observed that the soil reports required pile foundations. In order to
reduce the total construction, cost the client prefer for the shallow
foundations. This leads to the future or instantaneous collapse of
the buildings. This intension shall be omitted by the client.
3. On ground surface shall be marked or signed properly if the
underground utility lines like Gas, Sewage and Electric lines
passes through the proposed building structures.
4. For the analysis of the pile foundations, liquefaction analysis shall
be considered for the prevention of total or differential settlements.
5. For the analysis of the pile foundations most of the designers
follow the fixity based analysis. It is recommended that soil
structure interaction shall be considered for the most optimize pile
design.
6 The length of the pile shall be determined by the static or dynamic
load test The Toe of the single pile shall be terminated on the hard
sand strata.
7 All Loads and Load combinations described in BNBC shall be
followed strictly for the analysis and design of Buildings.
8 Fire Hazards Shall be considered for the structural analysis and
design of the steel structures strictly. BNBC does not
recommended the appropriates procedures for the Fire Hazards
analysis and design. Other international codes such as British and
American codes shall be followed for the analysis and design of
fire Hazards and necessary preventive measures.
9 Temperature loads, differential settlement of foundations shall be
considered for the analysis and design of Residential Buildings.

10 In case of the analysis and design of the tall buildings Linear and
nonlinear analysis shall be performed for the comparison of
results.
11 Though Performance based seismic design did not consider in
BNBC for the analysis and design of high-rise and residential
buildings, but Direct Displacement Based Design could be carried
out for the determinations of the maximum displacement demand
and collapse prevention capacity of the buildings.

12 All Gravity loads, Wind loads shall be considered according to the

BNBC.
13 For the Maximum Credible Earthquake and Design earthquake,
Seismic Acceleration coefficient shall be considered as per BNBC.
14 Irregular Buildings/Geometric Non Linear types of buildings are
the most vulnerable in case of seismic events. Proper analysis and
design shall be considered for the irregular structures.
15 It is observed that some buildings were designed by Flat slab
without satisfying the minimum design requirements. It is
recommended that at least three spans shall be continuous and in a
straight alignment for the considerations of the flat slab design.
