Sports Performance Option Units
Mental Health, Physical Health, Rugby
Introduction
Inquiry Questions
1. What are important factors, techniques, and applications of mental strength when
performing?
2. How does physical strength and nutrition influence athletic performance?
3. How can mental strength and physical strength influence sport specific skills?
Rationale
This option and the three units were created after being asked to teach an option as part of my
placement. As a university athlete, I feel quite capable and confident in teaching Sports
Performance, putting a high focus on mental abilities and the importance of nutrition. The three
units will be: Mental strength (self-talk, goal setting, visualization, mindfulness), physical
strength (nutrition, weight lifting), and sport specific skills (rugby). We do not know yet if
options this year will be on a three-week or six-week cycle, and therefore I have planned units
for both scenarios, with the six week plan going more in depth and requiring a few more forms
of assessment. Within the unit, student will create, analyze, reflect, and discuss, in lessons that
will require active listening, participation, movement, and application. When I asked if there was
a certain curriculum or outcomes I was to follow, I was told that I could focus on whatever
components I considered important, resulting in creating an option that focuses primarily on
mental and physical strength.
Sports performance, mental strength, and physical strength are all aspects of importance that can
contribute to a better balance within one’s personal life. Students will complete this option
having a better understanding of goal setting, physical ability, self-talk, and nutrition, which,
even outside of sport, all contribute to healthier lifestyles. Within this option students will learn
the importance of metacognition and self-talk, as well as recognizing how many small actions
and thoughts can contribute so something bigger. I intend for this option to encourage students to
develop skills and attributes that will help them to be successful when challenges come their
way.
Outcomes
By the end of the option, students will be able to
- Understand, explain, identify, and apply the specifications of the Canadian Food Guide
- Identify and explain various weightlifting movements
- Create a 1-2 day meal plan
- Describe the importance of proper warm up and cool down
- Identify the key characteristics of a goal (SMART)
- Create personal short term and long term goals
- Identify and explain the importance of mental strength in physical performance
- Recognize the application of mental and physical strength in a sport specific context

Differentiation
There is a variety of learning strands and strategies that students will engage with during this
option. We engage in written desk work in the form of creating goals, learning about nutrition,
and discussing the power of self-talk and affirmations. We also extend that work into real-life
situations, encouraging engagement with and applicability of lesson material. Students will also
have multiple opportunities to engage in the class work through physical movement, primarily in
the six-week option should that be the case. I plan on having further discussions with my
Teacher Mentor on how to prepare differentiation once we know what students will be taking
this option.
