Lesson In this lesson, children will be going on a scavenger hunt to learn about shapes. I will take photos of the
Summary: things in the classroom and outside the classroom for the children to find. The children will be going
outside looking for those things and taking pictures of them on their iPad minis. Scavenger hunt is a
great way to help children with literacy learning and it allow kids to practice problem-solving in a
tangible way. I think the lesson is a fun and creative way to get preschoolers engaged and using their
creativity to learn.
Estimated This lesson will take about 2 hours. I plan on dividing the lesson into 10 days, with each lesson lasting
Duration: 10 minutes because am working with 3-year old’s.

materials and
environment I will first look around the classroom for things that have different shapes and take pictures of them and then I will
do the same for the things I find outside as well. I will make sure that all my children have their equipment that
they will need for this scavenger hunt.
What materials will be used?
iPad minis, shape printout, crayons, plain paper, color pencils, smartboard

How will the learning environment be set up?

There will be a round table in the middle of the classroom with chairs for each child to sit on, I will have plain
papers, crayons, color pencils all on the table for all the children. This is where we will all sit after finding all our
scavenger hunt items so we can try to draw and color all the shapes we found.

Instructional Procedures:
Day 1: For the first day, I will gather the children to our reading area to introduce them to a shape book called Big Box of
Shapes by Wiley Blevins; illustrated by Elliot Kreloff. This a wonderful book to introduce children to shapes and inspire
them to experiment with their own shapes. I will read the book to the children and then I will explain and show them the
different shapes in the book. Every time we talk about a shape, I will tell them the sides and corners that each shape has.
Day 2: For the second day, I will read the story to the children again and then I will ask them some open-ended questions
to see how much they know about shapes now. Then I will show them a video on our classroom smartboard about the
different kinds of shapes, then I will name a shape and then call on each child to point to the shape that I just named on
the smartboard.
Day 3: For the third day, children will be coloring the different shapes however they like. I will provide them with shape
printouts and crayons, then I will show the different shapes on the smartboard one at a time and the children will color
the shape that popped up on the smartboard. I will go around each child to see if they colored the right shape to make
sure everyone knows the exact shape that is being shown.
Day 4: For the fourth day, I will be taking pictures of things in the classroom that has the different shapes and marking
them with a X with my camera so that when the children are looking for their shapes in the scavenger hunt lesson they
will be able to tell if that’s the right image they found. While am doing this, the children will be watching another shape
video on the smartboard.
Day 5: For the fifth day, I will read the shapes book to the children again to make them more familiar with these shapes.
Then I will be going outside to take pictures of things that look like shapes for the children to hunt. Then I will print them
out, laminate them so we can take them along on our scavenger hunt.
Day 6: For the sixth day, I will tell the children that we will be going on a scavenger hunt. I will give each child an iPad
mini to take their pictures. I will also give them a shape printout sheet to cross out the shapes they find. I will call out a
shape and then show them a picture of the shape that they need to find in the classroom. Once they find that image,
children will take a picture of it and then cross out that shape on their shape printout sheet.
Day 7: For the seventh day, Children will be finding the rest of the images that they need to find in the classroom to
wrap up the classroom part of the scavenger hunt.
Day 8: For the eighth day, children will be going outside to find the outside images that I took pictures of. Children will
use their iPad minis to take pictures of these images as I call them out and then cross that shape image out from their
shape printout sheet with their crayons.
Day 9: For the ninth day, children will be finishing up the scavenger hunt by finding the rest of the images that has not
been found the previous day.
Day 10: For the last day, children will all have their images in their iPad minis. I will gather them around in a circle, show
all the images that we found on the smartboard, then I will be pointing to the images and the children will be telling me
what kind of shape that image has. I will also printout all their images and laminate them for the children to take home
so they can always have it to keep learning and see the hard work that they did during the scavenger hunt lesson.

This is a wonderful website that helps educators with great classroom ideas and so much more. Students will benefit a
lot from this website because there are a lot of activities that they can do at home with their parents.

Differentiated Instructional Support: Describe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered) to meet the
needs of gifted or accelerated students: I will not show them the images of the things that they need to find but instead I
will instruct them to find the things in the classroom and outside that has the different shapes in them.

Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the material:
For these students, I will use scaffolding techniques with them, and I will make sure to stay close by to them so that I can
help them with any question they might have.
Vocabulary: Circle, Triangle, Square, Rectangle, Oval, Rhombus, Star

For teachers I will need a computer, smartboard, laminating machine, The computer and smartboard will
be provided by the center, I will laminate the pictures by myself.

For students The students will need iPad minis and crayons,
