Mechanical & Energy Eng. Department
Final Examination
2nd Attempt
2015 – 2016

Q1: (20 Marks)

Answer the following questions:
1. What are the advantages of slip ring motor over squirrel cage motor? (5 M)
2. What is the purpose of connecting external resistors to slip ring Induction motor? (5 M)
3. How to cool the transformer? Explain? (5 M)
4. What do you mean by a DC motors? (5 M)

Q2: (25 Marks)

A 480-V, 60 Hz, 50-hp, three phase induction motor is drawing 60A at 0.85 PF lagging. The stator
copper losses are 2 kW, and the rotor copper losses are 700 W. The friction and windage losses
are 600 W, the core losses are 1800 W, and the stray losses are negligible. Find the following
quantities:
1. The air-gap power PAG.
2. The power converted Pconv.
3. The output power Pout.
4. The efficiency of the motor.

Q3: (20 Marks)

A d.c. series motor takes 40 A at 220 V and runs at 800 r.p.m. If the armature and field resistance
are 0.2  and 0.1  respectively and the iron and friction losses are 0.5 kW, find the torque
developed in the armature. What will be the output of the motor?

Q4: (20 Marks)

A short-shunt compound generator delivers a load current of 30 A at 220 V, and has armature,
series-field and shunt-field resistance of 0.05 , 0.3  and 200  respectively. Calculate the
induced e.m.f. and the armature current. Allow 1 V per brush for contact drop.

Q5: (15 Marks)

In a given R–L circuit, R = 3.5  and L = 0.1 H. Find the current through the circuit, the voltage
across resistance, the voltage across inductance and power factor if a 50 Hz, voltage V=220 30
is applied across the circuit.
