계지탕(桂枝湯) - 건구(乾嘔), 발열(發熱), 비명(鼻鳴), 상풍(傷風), 오풍(惡風), 자한(自汗), 태음병(太陰病), 한출(汗出)
Therapeutic actions TCM Pattern
 Regulates the exterior muscle layer and induces sweating (muscle layer)  Exogenous Wind Cold attack,
 Regulates the Ying & Wei resulting with the Exterior Vacuity Pattern
-> elegantly tonifies while releasing the exterior

 External Wind Cold attack, predominantly Wind factor damages the Wei causing unstable Ying, Ying and Wei disharmony, and disruption of Lung and Stomach Qi.
 Gui Zhi Tang disorder is progression of Ma Huang Tang disorder – externally-contracted Wind-Cold leading to an exterior Cold Vacuity condition due to disharmony between the Wei and Ying
Qi.
 There is aversion to Wind, heat effusion, and spontaneous sweating, which indicates the main pathological factor is the Wind evil.
 Wind is a Yang evil and it injures the Wei causing weakness in the interstices. The Wei Qi is drained out when damaged. This in turn disrupts the stabilising effect of the nourishing Ying.
 Ying and Wei disharmony Pattern (Shang Han Run) – this reflects Wind factor affecting the Wei and causing unstable Ying.
Signs & symptoms Bing Ji Analysis
 Headache, stiff neck  External Wind-Cold invades the muscles and the exterior, it impedes the flow of Qi in the channels (e.g. Taiyang)
 Heat effusion (Fa Re)  The battle between the external pathogenic influence and the normal Qi
 Aversion to Wind  The opening of interstices and pores (sweating) makes the person more sensitive to the environment, hence aversion to wind.
 Sweating  Wei Qi weaken from the battle with external Wind-Cold, causing inability to guarding Ying Qi properly. The Ying Qi therefore becomes
unstable and is unable to contain the fluids, resulting in sweating. The sweating doesn’t lead to any improvement in the condition due to weak
Wei Qi behind it.
 No thirst  When there is fever due to exterior Cold, there is no particular thirst.
 Retching  When exterior LU Wei is weakened by an external attack, the pathogenic factor enters the interior through the nose (opening of LU), skin and
 Heavy sound from the nostril, nasal interstices (related to LU and ST). This disrupts the Qi mechanism of Tai Yin (LU, SP) and Yang Ming (LI, ST) system.

TCM Pattern / Actions Bing Ji Summary
Pi (glomus) below the Heart disorder due to Cold and Hot clumping  This type of focal distension is due to improper purging of an exterior or half-exterior, half-interior condition in a
patient with underlying ST deficiency. Purging aggravates the ST deficiency and causes the pathogenic influence
 Harmonises Cold and Hot pathogenic complexes
to sink into the interior, where it produces clumping in the epigasgtric region and focal distension.
 Disperses clumping and eliminates focal distension  The epigastrium is soft, and palpation will reveal no masses or areas of hardness. There is only slight pain, or no
pain at all.

Bing Ji Analysis Signs & symptom

Cold-heat complex in the middle jiao  Sensation of fullness (Man) but no pain
Pi generates heat; the heat injures ST Qi, leading to cold  Nausea/vomiting, borborygmus, diarrhoea
