Wireline Jars for Oilfield Use

PCE wireline link jars, also known as spang jars or mechanical jars, use the weight of connected stems to deliver impact jarring through manipulating the wireline. The effectiveness depends on factors like stem weight, jar stroke length, tubing size/straightness, fluid viscosity, and well pressure. Jars are composed of two linked pieces that can extend or collapse in strokes of 20" or 30" and are available in various outer diameters for use with standard wireline connections.

Wireline Link/Spang Jar

PCE Wireline Link Jars, sometimes called ‘Spang Jars’ or ‘Mechanical Jars’ are of the
cable tool type and utilise the weight of the stems connected immediately above to deliver
effective jarring impacts, by manipulating the wireline upwards or downwards at the
surface.
The effectiveness of these impacts is largely dependant on the weight of the stem used, the
length of the stroke of the ‘jars’, the size and straightness of the tubing, the viscosity of the
fluid in the tube and the well pressure acting upon the cross sectional area of wireline.
‘Jars’ are composed of two pieces linked together rather like long chain links which are
free to be extended or collapsed (stroke). Jars’ are available in sizes 1-1/4", 1-1/2", 1-7/8",
and 2-1/2" o.d. and “strokes” of 20" and 30". All wireline ‘Jars’ are supplied with standard
wireline threads (pin and box) and fishing necks.
