Respond To Your Viewers
Remember when uploading a video to keep in touch with your audience in the comment
section. Respond to questions when asked and thank people for compliments. It’s nice
to see the uploader take the time to respond to your comment. In my opinion, if you
don’t respond to your YouTube comments, it almost seems like you don’t care.
Remember to use proper grammar when responding to comments. After all you’re not
sending a text message.
Bonus Tip: If multiple people share an account, add your name at the end of the
comment. It’s nice to see who is responding to your comment.
“Glad you enjoyed this new style we are trying out. We will take this feedback
into consideration –Joe”
Know Your Content
If you are going to make a video, you should know what you are going to say before you
start filming.
Avoid:
Repeating the words “and” “un” “so” “like” and “uh”
Saying things you already said
Saying this you aren’t sure are correct “I think the price is $19.95”

Bonus Tip: Try making a list of things you want to cover in the video. Sometimes a script
is helpful while other times just bullet points will be good enough.

Be Yourself
Don’t try to be something you’re not. People will see right through you if you do this.
Make your videos ones that you want to make and not ones that you think will be super
popular. Don’t copy people and their style. You will get a lot of hate if you directly copy
someone and their video style.
Be Consistent
Being a consistent uploader makes people want to subscribe. If you haven’t uploaded a
video in months nobody is going to subscribe to you. It’s important to remember the
phrase “quality over quantity”. While uploading on a regular basis is important, it’s also
important not to upload too frequently. I’d rather watch one really good YouTube video
over three bad ones. It’s also important to note that uploading too often can also cause
people to unsubscribe. You need to find a balance of when you will upload. YouTube’s
layout puts all you subscriptions in a long list. If you take up majority of the spots,
people will unsubscribe

Upload When Your Viewers are Awake
If you spend a long time making a video and editing it, it’s important to upload it when
your audience is awake. Using YouTube analytics you can find a lot of useful
information about your subscribers. You can find out their age and what country your
viewers are. Using this information can help determine when you should upload. Let’s
say your audience is mainly teenagers located in the UK. It doesn’t make logical sense
to upload a video at 10 AM EST or when they are in school. If you can, wait until it’s a
reasonable time for your audience to be online before uploading the video.
If you’re a Branded YouTube partner, this problem can easily be solved. Branded
Partners have the ability to select the time that they want the video to upload at. Note
you must select this option BEFORE uploading the video. The times are based in GMT
not local so make sure that you keep this in mind.
Keep Your Videos Short
While some popular videos are long, most viral videos are short. You want to make sure
that your video isn’t too long. If you upload a really long video, you’re likely not to get the
view count you were expecting. Unless you already have a large following, don’t try to
make super long videos. The ideal video length is anywhere between three to five
minutes. People tend to have a very short attention span. After a few minutes, people
start to zone out and leave the video completely. Other viewers won’t even click on
YouTube Tips
videos just based off of how lengthy the video is.
While there are exceptions to this rule, try to keep this in mind when making your
videos. Some videos are in depth enough that you could easily make something like a
series. This way, you can keep your videos short and still get your point across.

Have Good Metadata
Metadata, also known as titles tags, and descriptions are the key to getting a video to
be successful. While there are some viral videos that can get away with horrible
metadata, most people will have to provide good metadata. Google has a bot called
GoogleBot that crawls their websites. GoogleBot looks at this information and indexes it
within YouTube. So having a good title, description, and tags can be very helpful.
A good title captures your audience and is related to your video. You should not use
misleading titles like “Obama really a women?” when the video is about puppies. The
perfect title is something that is descriptive, something you would be interested in, and
short. For a good chunk of the time, simple titles can be good. Just make sure that the
title isn’t too simple and generic. Your title, along with the thumbnail is what gets your
viewer to click on your content. Examples of good titles are “iPhone 4S: Initial
Impressions”. This title is very clear. It lets viewers know that you will be giving you first
impressions of the device and it’s not an extremely simple title.
You want to have nice descriptions that are in depth enough so that way you can get a
lot of traffic to that video. You might spend hours making the world’s best video. That
doesn’t matter if you don’t have good metadata. Spend some time writing a good
description for your video. A good description is not a sentence or two. My rule is to
spend the time it takes for your video to render and upload to write your description.
Spend at least three to five minutes minimum writing your video description.
Don’t just tag one or two things in your video. While it’s not okay to false tag or tagload,
make sure you put tags that are about your video or that relate to your video. YouTube Networks

Have Good Metadata
Let’s do an example of some good tags. Let’s use a video from my partnership series as
an example.
“YouTube You Tube Partnership partner program application process what to put on
your become a TechTube TechTubeCentral Tech Tube Central”
This is a good example because you don’t see the same words twice and the tags are
in depth. Notice how I put “what to put on your” this is because I already included the
term “YouTube partnership” in my tags. There is no need to put the same word twice in
your description. It’s actually bad to tag the same word twice. Make sure you tag your
username so that way you appear in the related video section. Do this in all videos so
that way some of your related videos are yours.
Use Custom Thumbnails
One of the most important parts of your video information is your thumbnail. People
want to see good looking thumbnails. When people see a video in their sub box or the
search results, there is a certain order of what people look at. The person first looks at
the thumbnail, then the title, followed by the description and uploader.
YouTube automatically takes three screenshots of your video and allows you to use one
of these as the thumbnail. Pick the one that you think is the most appealing. If you are
doing something like hardware review, pick a thumbnail of you actually holding the
YouTube Tips
device.
You can now use a custom thumbnail for your video. Ideally, you will want to use an
image that has a resolution of 1280 X 720 pixels. Save this resolution as a template in
Photoshop for easy access later.

Use Annotations, Video Response & Playlists
Annotating your videos is an easy way to boost your view count. While it’s sometimes
hard to remember to do this, try to use annotations when appropriate. Annotations are a
great way to make a call of action for your viewer to do something. Linking your
previous videos and a subscribe button at the end is a great way to get more viewers
and subscribers. If you mention a pervious video, make sure to put an annotation to the
video you are referring to.
Video responses can boost your views a lot as well. If you made a video that is related
to another video you found, post the video as a video response. That way, users from
that uploader will go to your channel and possibly subscribe to your channel.
Put videos that are in a series or related videos in a playlist. Playlists appear in search
results and on your channel. If you are a branded partner you can also set a specific
playlist as the official playlist. When you enable this, you will see the playlist name
above the related videos section of the page.
Try Collaborating With Someone
Collaborations can be very powerful on YouTube. It allows you to get discovered by
someone else’s audience that might have not heard about you before. Try asking a
YouTube Networks
friend or a related channel if you are willing to a collab with them. You can do a video
with both of you in it and have a link to the other person on your channel. Another
popular option is to have someone make a video for their channel and you make one for
theirs. This way they can get a taste of what you have on your channel and hopefully
subscribe to you after watching. Obviously you should do collabs with people that
would also benefit from this. If you ask someone with a lot more viewers then you, they
are likely to decline the offer.

Have a Clean Sleek Channel Layout
Your channel page is what people go to when they want to learn more about your
content. When you have a layout, use a custom background. There are tons of
templates out there for the new layout. A good layout is clean and not cluttered.
Sometimes it’s better to have fewer things on your channel then more. Image
backgrounds that are too busy or just plain aren’t appealing to look at.
Ignore the Trolls
When you first start out on YouTube, you might be wondering why you get such nasty
hate comments or just a lot of dislikes. Most of these people are called trolls. Trolls try
to ruin YouTubers and try to get you to close your account. If you read a hateful
comment simply just delete the comment and go on with your day. If you constantly see
comments from the same person, simply block them and the problem is solved. Don’t
close your account because of trolls. If you do this they win and you lose.

. Expand Outside of YouTube
People like to stay updated with YouTubers outside of the website. Creating a
Facebook fanpage, a Twitter account and or a Google Plus account is a great way for
people to stay interested in your content. When you release a video, tweet it! People
will view the video and if they like it, they will retweet it with their friends. You’d be
surprised how many subscribers you can gain from twitter and other social media sites.
Link to your social media accounts in your video descriptions and on your channel page.
Think about making a template for your video description. Leave a space for the place
where you describe your content. This way you don’t forget to link to social media and
it’s a lot faster to use a template.

. Have Fun and Never Give Up
YouTube is about having fun doing what you do. It’s not about the money or the view
count. It’s about doing what you like to do as a hobby it takes time and patience to run
your channel. Just because you don’t get thousands of views on your channel
overnight, doesn’t mean you should quit.
