ii) Write an equation to show how this buffer reacts with H+ ions from ibuprofen.
iii) A buffer solution containing equal concentrations of the two sodium phosphate salts has
a pH of 7.20. Calculate the pH of a pharmaceutical preparation containing 0.002 mol
dm-3 of Na2HPO4 and 0.005 mol dm-3 of NaH2PO4

18. (a) i) Write a balanced chemical equation for the equilibrium occurring when each of the
following are added to water, then write the Ksp expression for lead(II) carbonate and
nickel(II) hydroxide. [4 marks]
ii) Which is more soluble in water at 25°C, lead(II) carbonate (Ksp = 1.5 x 10-13) or
Nickel(II) hydroxide (Ksp = 5.47 x 10-16)? Explain why.

b) The following is the equilibrium equation for the formation of dinitrogen tetroxide, N2O4,
by nitrogen dioxide, NO2.

ii) When sealed syringe is cooled, colour of gas turns light brown.
iii) When the gas in the syringe is compressed, the brown colour fades further.
iv) What happens when some helium gas is pumped into the syringe without any change in
the total volume of the syringe?

ii) The equivalence point for a titration between hydrochloric acid, HCl, a strong acid, and

considered a suitable indicator for this titration.
