2. Assume suitable data wherever required and mention it clearly.
3. Writing appropriate units, nomenclature, and drawing neat sketches/schematics wherever required is an integral
part of the answer.

1. Explain calorific values and theoretical calculation of calorific values . (5)

2. Describe five major physical properties of liquid fuels. (5)

3. Explain with examples and reactions, how processes like isomerization, reforming and cracking (5)
can enhance octane number of hydrocarbons.

4. With the help of a suitable diagram and reactions, describe how zeolite/permutit method is used (5)
for softening of water.

5. Write short notes on any two of the following: (a) Priming (b) Hot lime-soda process (c) Reverse (5)
osmosis

6. (a) A sample of coal was found to contain carbon 90%, hydrogen 5%, oxygen 1%, nitrogen 2% and (2½)
remaining being ash. Assuming air contains 23% oxygen. Calculate the minimum air required for
complete combustion of 1 Kg of coal.
(b) A sample of municipality water on analysis gave the following results: CaCO3= 26.5 ppm, (2½)
Ca(HCO3)2 = 18 ppm , MgSO4= 11.3 ppm, CaSO4= 8.2 ppm, KCl= 20 ppm , MgCl2= 1 ppm, Fe2O3=
0.08 ppm, SiO2= 1 ppm. Calculate the temporary, permanent and total hardness.. Calculate
temporary, permanent and total hardness. [Mass of C=12, O=16, Mg=24, K=39, Cl=35.5, Ca=40,
S=32, Fe=56, Si= 28]
