Nitoproof PU Aromatic - elastomeric waterproofing membrane

Nitocote PU Aliphatic - chemical and UV resistant protective coating

Section A : General Comments

Comments
BACKGROUND

Nitoproof PU Aromatic is a single component waterproofing membrane based on Aromatic

Polyurethane resins which cures by reaction with atmospheric moisture to give a tough
elastomeric waterproof membrane for below grades. The waterproofing membrane also can be
used for above grades when combined with Nitocote PU Aliphatic, a single component, high
quality protective coating based on Aliphatic Polyurethane resins.

High temperature working

It is suggested that, for temperatures above 35°C, the following guidelines are adopted as
good working practice:

(i) Store materials in a cool (preferably temperature controlled) environment, avoiding exposure to
direct sunlight.
(ii) Keep equipment cool, arranging shade protection if necessary. It is important to keep cool
those surfaces of the equipment which will come into direct contact with the material itself.
(iii) Try to avoid application during the hottest times of the day, arrange temporary shading as
necessary.
(iv) Make sufficient material, site and labour available to ensure that application is continuous.

Equipment

It is suggested that the following list of equipment is adopted as a minimum requirement.

Protective clothing : Protective overalls

: Good quality gloves, goggles and face mask

Preparation equipment : Stiff wire brush

: Proprietary blasting equipment (if necessary)

Mixing equipment : Slow speed jiffy mixer

Application equipment : Brush or Roller

: Knapsack type spray equipment

Application - points of note

Fosroc operates a policy to encourage the use, where possible, of approved or licensed applicators.
This ensures that surface preparation and material application are completed satisfactorily so that
the long term performance of the materials is assured. For contractors who wish to apply the
materials themselves Fosroc is also able to offer technical assistance and training on-site.

Section B : Application Method (See Section C)

1.0 SURFACE PREPARATION

1.1 Concrete Surfaces

1.1.1 Clean the substrate free of all dust, loose material, laitance, oil etc. by wire brush, or, when
necessary, with a light grit blasting or water jetting.

1.1.2 Prior to commencing application, dry out any standing water using a sponge.

1.1.3 The substrate irregularities, pinholes, cracks or imperfections should be repaired using the
appropriate Fosroc Nitomortar or Renderoc products.

1.2 Metal and PVC Surfaces

1.2.1 Clean the substrate free of all dust and abrade the surface well using appropriate methods
such as blasting.

1.3 Existing Coatings

1.3.1 Contact your local Fosroc office for advice on suitable methods of surface preparation.

2.0 Priming

2.1 Priming is not normally required on good quality concrete substrates. However, high
absorbent surfaces such as porous concrete, prepare a mixture consisting of 1:1 of Nitoproof
PU Aromatic and Fosroc Solvent 101 and prime the surface completely.

2.2 Metal, glazed and PVC surfaces should be primed with Fosroc Primer 4; and Bituminous
surfaces should be primed with Nitoflor FC130 Clear.

2.3 The primer should be fully dry and cured prior to the application of the Nitoproof PU Aromatic.

3.0 Application

Note:

Nitoproof PU Aromatic –an Aromatic Polyurethane Waterproof protective coating, and

Nitocote PU Aliphatic –an Aliphatic Polyurethane protective coating, should be applied only
in well ventilated conditions, except otherwise when respirators are used mandatorily.

3.1 Below Grades Applications

Nitoproof PU Aromatic (Wet Film Thickness = 350 to 500 microns per coat)

3.1.1 Mix the one part Nitoproof PU Aromatic using a slow speed jiffy mixer for 3 minutes to
achieve homogeneous paint.

3.1.2 Apply the Nitoproof PU Aromatic onto the prepared substrate using a nap roller and spread it
evenly on the surface.

3.1.3 Nitoproof PU Aromatic shall be applied in two coats at wet film thickness (WFT) between 350
and 500 microns per coat (total WFT between 700 to 1000 microns at two coats).

3.1.4 Allow the first coat to become tack-free (i.e. approx. 6 hours at 25°C) before applying the
second coat.

3.2 Above Grades Application (exposed)

Base Coat: Nitoproof PU Aromatic (Wet Film Thickness = 350 to 500 microns per coat)

Note: Over-coating should be done within not more than 48 hours.

Top Coat: Nitocote PU Aliphatic (Wet Film Thickness = 250 to 300 microns per coat)

3.1.5 Mix the one part Nitocote PU Aliphatic using a slow speed jiffy mixer for 3 minutes to achieve
homogeneous paint.

3.1.6 Apply Nitocote PU Aliphatic by nap roller. It should be applied in two coats at wet film
thickness (WFT) between 250 to 300 micron per coat to give a finished dry film thickness
(DFT) between 150 and 180 microns per coat (total DFT between 300 to 360 microns at two
coats).

3.1.7 Allow the coat to be tack-free (i.e. approx. 4 hours at 25°C) before applying the second coat.

Note: Over-coating should be done within not more than 48 hours.

Aliphatic. It remains the responsibility of the Engineer to determine the correct method for any given
application.

Where alternative methods are to be used, these must be submitted to Fosroc for approval, in
writing, prior to commencement of any work. Fosroc will not accept responsibility or liability for
variations to the above method statement under any other condition.
