ENS 164 MECHANICS OF DEFORMABLE BODIES

Course Description:
Analysis and design of structural and machine elements such as tension and compression members, shafts,
beams and columns based on equilibrium and material properties; stress and strain analysis; principal stresses and Mohr's
circle; riveted and welded connections; members of two or more materials; deflections of beams.

Credit: 3 units (3 hours lecture/week)


Prerequisite(s): ENS 161 (Statics of Rigid Bodies)

Course Objectives:
 To learn the different stresses and deformation of machine members
 To provide working knowledge on the basic procedure in machine design.

Course Outline
1. 1 Stress – Axial Loads
Normal Stress, Shearing Stress, Transformation of Stress, Concept of Design
2. 2 Strain – Axial Loads
Strain, Stress-Strain Diagram, Hooke’s Law, Deflection under Axial Load, Material Properties
3. 3 Bending of Beams
Stress due to pure Bending, Moment of Inertia, Stress Distribution, Design of Beams
4. 4 Shear in Beams
Shearing Stress in members due to Bending
Mid term exam
5. 5 Torsion
Moment of Torsion, Shearing Stresses and Deformations of Circular Shafts
6. 6 Analysis of plane Stress
Compound Stresses, Combined Stresses, Transformation of Stress, Mohr’s Circle
7. 7 Deflection of Beams
Deflection of members due to Bending
8. 8 Stability of Compression Members
Euler Formula, Buckling Load, Buckling Analysis
Final Exam

Quota of Total Course Credit: 30% mid-semester examination


40% final-semester examination
30% assignment

Passing 60%
