Eric Hodel - Service Training Instructor

The document provides an agenda and objectives for a training class on service and diagnostics for Caterpillar machines. It discusses electronic systems integration on CAT machines and covers on-board diagnostics tools like the Caterpillar Monitoring System and off-board diagnostic tools like the Service Technician Workbench, DataView, Service Information System, and Caterpillar ET. Lab exercises will have students use these diagnostic tools to troubleshoot issues on 769D and 962G machines.

Agenda
Classroom
• Machine Electronic System Integration
• On-board Diagnostics
• Off-board Diagnostics

Lab Exercises
• 769D use Cat Monitoring System
• 962G use ET
Objective

• Upon completion of the presentation and

lab exercises, the student will be able to;
– Explain the electronic system integration on
CAT machines.
– Explain the similarities and differences between
the Cat Monitoring System, VIMS and MIDS.
– Explain the function of the Off-board
diagnostic tools.
Electronic Systems on CAT
machines
Caterpillar machines are electronically
controlled and the electronic
communications and functions are
monitored.
Engines have an ECM
Machines have ECMs
Transmissions have ECMs

• Transmission Shifting
• Torque Converter Lockup
• Engine Over-speed Protection
Systems • Control Throttle Shifting (CTS)
Controlled By • Directional Shift Management
ECM • Top Gear Limit
• Neutral Coast Inhibiting
• Torque Limiting
• Speed Limiting
• Fail In Gear Protection
So we have this electronic
communication . . .

• How do we talk to it?

• How do we troubleshoot it?

• How do we diagnose it?

Diagnostic Steps
Step 1: Observe the reported operator complaint
(I.e. alert indicator flashing, gauge in the low/high
range, action lamp flashing, action alarm
sounding).

Step 2: Perform a visual check of the system in

question (I.e. check fluid level, carefully touch
hydraulic tank, etc.)

Step 3: Using the operator mode select switch,

select the Diagnostic Scrolling Mode and note any
diagnostic codes displayed.
Step 4: Consult the appropriate electrical schematic
and service manual for the code shown.

Step 5: Connect the 4C8195 Control Service Tool to

the service connector in the cab. Scroll to the
Service Mode and place the desired diagnostic
code on HOLD. (or use ET)

Step 6: Note the Component Identifier (CID) and

Failure Mode Identifier (FMI) shown on the
digital display. Consult the CID/FMI chart in the
service manual and develop a troubleshooting
strategy for the information displayed.
Step 7: Using the service tools and the above
diagnostic information, perform the necessary
troubleshooting procedures (checking for opens,
shorts or grounds) required to locate the root cause
of the problem.

Step 8: Repair the problem, clear the diagnostic

codes from the display, and perform an
operational check of the system.
