WATERLOO YOUTH CENTER SOCIAL STUDIO
The community center is located on a fault line between newly found affluence and a socially
disadvantaged population that traditionally occupied the area. The building as well as
landscape treatment, have to withstand a high degree of vandalism and reduce ubiquitous
graffiti.
The project is a result of close collaboration between architect and landscape architect and
client. Plants play an important role, lending the building an appearance that counteracts its
“tough” appearance when naked from greenery. As the plants will further invade their host
structure, this building will become more and more green, acquiring almost an iconic
character when lit or when covered by flowering plants. Treatment of retaining walls loosely
echoes fractal geometries of the building roof. The openings based on Braille letters, are
colonized by succulent plants.

The building design takes inspiration from
a number of diverse sources. Amongst
them, the grass covered iron-age forts of
Celtic Wales(1); the aviary at London Zoo
designed by Cedric Price(2); and the work
of John Krubsack(3) an American
naturalist who experimented with
growing and grafting plants into shapes,
creating the first chair that was grown
rather than made.

• SPECIFIC AREA FOR ALLOTED FUNCTION:
Literature case study of youth centre SOCIAL - 5
• CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT:
The main idea of this project is to develop a space for the youths where
they will understand their true potentials and utilize them in a useful way.
Every youth has their individual talents and creativity. The only need is to
recognize them and convert them into a more important and fruitful idea.
In this center the experts will guide he youths in their right paths and help
them discover about themselves.
Hence the concept has been developed:
• EMPOWER YOUTHS:Introducing educational and training facilities for the
youths who are deprived from these facilities and the ones who are
suffering from unemployment.
• INSPIRE YOUTHS:Understand their true potential through skills in art,
sports, music, theatre for development of healthy mind and soul for our
culture and heritage.
• SUPPORT YOUTHS:Strengthen their potentials through education and
entertainment at the same time.
Literature case study of youth centre SOCIAL - 5
• FORM DEVELOPMENT: • The main idea is to create a valley like effect in the
area since the ancient history of the city tells us
that many valleys existed in the past that had
been removed over the years for building the city.
Hence to revive the old nature and environment
the idea has been developed in such a way that
the form has a staggering terrace like effect that
TO DEVELOP A VALLEY LIKE SECTION: gradually grows upwards for this effect.
THREE INDISUAL BLOCK S HAVING A FORM REFLECTION FROM
THREE INDIVISUAL FUNCTION: CONTOUR LINES:
Literature case study of youth centre SOCIAL - 5
• BASIC ZONING OF THE FUNCTION:
• The three distinctive zones of the form has been derived
from the concept. The educational block has all the
classrooms, media centre and the studios for the
students. This is where the youths are trained for their
future. The residential block has the dorm facilities for
the students where they can stay as long as they are
receiving the training or is here for workshops and
seminars. The entertainment block is actually made for
public use as well as for the students.
Literature case study of youth centre SOCIAL - 5
• DESIGN:
• The main idea was to make the form merge with the receding landscape in the background.
The busy city should have an open space specially for their growing youths that will give
them a breath of relief and also for all the city dwellers regardless their age and gender. As
we can see the immense public plaza surrounding the form is the focal point of the entire
project since it caters everyone from the city. starting from the mobile vendors to the slum
children or growing youth and the adults it s a place for everyone.

Location
• The Zeimuls, Centre of Creative Services is located in
RIGA,capital of LATVIA.
• The idea of the building was developed as a proposal for an architecture
competition for a place next to the castle mound of Rezekne and aim of the
city - to create innovative, creative environment for children in Rezekne.
The shape of the roof not only creates a feeling of safety and protection for the children, but
also allows for an ample and diverse flow of natural light through various openings into all the
rooms, halls and corridors, while from the outside it shines mysteriously in the darkness.
It was the site itself that suggested the building
should settle deep into the ground and that the
fifth facade - the geometrically triangulated green
roof - should become the main feature of the
structure.
The spaces consists of small workshop or classrooms for the students, opening into
bigger courtyards and gathering spaces.

The Center is also
benefitting the

SECTION EXPLORATION
MATERIAL AND CONSTRUCTION.
Locally sourced bamboo is utilized
for its inherent structural qualities
in the columns lining the walkways,
while its warm tone and
permeability is harnessed for
many of the Center’s facades and
window shades.
These natural elements are
wonderfully complemented with
the use of rough-cast concrete,
using local techniques of split
bamboo formwork to provide
textured walls that are
punctuated with circular
peepholes and tunnels for children
to traverse through.
The use of bamboo makes the
structure highly durable and low
maintenance as it is very strong,
occasionally being called “vegetal
steel.”
Passive design, including;
natural light reaching all spaces,
passive ventilation systems,
use of thermal mass,
multi-layered sun control roofs,
and water collection,
allows the building to operate
without the use of power. This is
highly beneficial for a very poor
town
All in all, the project forms an exemplar for participatory design, embracing the idea that good architecture
can directly aid the healthy development of children – not to mention injecting a healthy dose of fun into
proceedings … consider me truly bamboo-zled by its success.
