CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Refrigeration Trainer has a large impact on industry, lifestyle, agriculture and

settlement patterns. refrigeration is a process of moving heat from one location to

another in controlled conditions. The work of heat transport is traditionally driven by

mechanical work, but can also be driven by heat, magnetism, electricity, laser, or other

means. Refrigeration has many applications, including but not limited to: household

refrigerators, industrial freezers, and air conditioning. Heat pumps may use the heat

output of the refrigeration process and also may be designed to be reversible, but are

otherwise similar to air conditioning units. Conditions of refrigerant and oil can be

observed under various methods of operation. It plays an important role in developing

countries, primarily for the preservation of food, medicine, and for air conditioning.
This experiment demonstrates the principles of vapor compression refrigeration.

The vapor compression cycle is the dominant refrigeration technology, found in most

refrigerators, freezers, air-conditioning systems, and heat pumps.  In this cycle, cooling

(heat acquisition) is achieved with low-pressure evaporation of refrigerant. Thermal

energy absorbed in evaporation is rejected to the surroundings through high-pressure

refrigerant condensation. Mechanical work is applied in the compressor to raise the

working fluid from low to high pressure.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

This trainer introduces the system of the basics in terms of refrigerator, air conditioner and

freezer. However, it has a restriction that is seen in the actual system

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Trainer- something (such as a machine or vehicle) used in training.

Evaporator- The evaporator is located inside a refrigerator and is the part that makes

the items in the refrigerator cold. As the refrigerant turns from a liquid into a gas through

evaporation, it cools the area around it, producing the proper environment for storing

food.

Compressor- The compressor pushes out the hot, compressed gas through the outside

metal coils (tubes) on the back or bottom of the refrigerator. These coils allow the heat to

dissipate into the surrounding air.

Pressure Gauge- Pressure measurement is the analysis of an applied force by a fluid

on a surface. Pressure is typically measured in units of force per unit of surface area.

Many techniques have been developed for the measurement of pressure and vacuum.

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE (RRL)

The refrigeration industry has accepted the challenge of chloroflurocarbons

phase out and new eco-friendly refrigerant like hydroflurocarbons and hydrocarbons are

replacing chloroflurocarbons in all commercial and industrial application. Vapour

compression refrigeration trainer is an important equipment of thermal engineering lab of

mechanical engineering department which operated using chlorofluorocarbon 12.

CFC12 is the most important member of CFC refrigerants which are being targeted for

phase out in India by 2010. In this paper, performance valuation of many eco-friendly

hydrocarbon refrigerants for replacing CFC12 in the trainer has been done and a

suitable drop in alternative refrigerant for retrofitting has been identified. (Alka Bani

Agrawal and Vipin Shrivastava, 2010)

Achieved by various control elements whose goal is to increase system utilization. In

addition to increasing usability, such elements have the role of system automation,

which enables high quality system operation without the presence of a human.

The use of a semi-hermetic compressor in a refrigeration trainer enhances its educational value by demonstrating the efficiency and functionality of a common type of compressor used in refrigeration systems. Semi-hermetic compressors are known for their durability and ease of maintenance, which makes them suitable for training purposes. They allow students to observe the mechanics of compression and understand maintenance procedures, thereby providing practical knowledge applicable to real-world systems .

A refrigeration trainer enhances system usability and automation by using control elements that optimize system operation and allow for automation without requiring constant human interaction. This facilitates a high-quality educational experience by enabling students to experiment with different operational modes and understand how to manage and maintain refrigeration systems effectively. The presence of automation elements also illustrates modern practices in refrigeration technology, which can improve learning outcomes .

The phase-out of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in refrigeration systems was necessary due to their harmful effects on the ozone layer, leading to environmental damage. As a result, the refrigeration industry has transitioned to using more eco-friendly alternatives such as hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and hydrocarbons. These alternatives do not deplete the ozone layer and are less harmful to the environment. Specifically, hydrocarbons have been evaluated as suitable replacements for CFC12 in vapor compression refrigeration trainers .

A refrigeration trainer supports economic growth by offering a low-cost educational tool that can lead to innovations in refrigeration technology. This can result in increased economic activity and potentially new product developments. Societally, it helps by demonstrating refrigeration's role in preserving food and medicine, which is crucial for preventing illness and maintaining health standards. The trainer also serves as an educational reference for future researchers, promoting continued advancements in the field .

Sight glass tubes and pressure gauges play a critical role in the functioning of a refrigeration trainer by providing visual and quantitative feedback about the system's operation. Sight glass tubes at the inlet and outlet of the evaporator and condenser allow users to observe the refrigerant state changes. Pressure gauges measure the pressure levels at different points in the system, helping to ensure that the system operates within safe and efficient parameters. These tools enhance understanding and control of the refrigeration process .

The development of a low-cost refrigeration trainer influences future research and innovation by providing an accessible educational resource that enables hands-on experimentation and learning. This can lead to greater innovation as more students and researchers can afford to study and improve refrigeration technologies. The findings generated from using these trainers can serve as a solid foundation for further research and the development of new, more efficient refrigeration systems .

The main purpose of a refrigeration trainer in a thermal engineering laboratory is to allow students to understand and experiment with the principles of vapor compression refrigeration. It demonstrates the refrigeration cycle by showing how low-pressure evaporation of refrigerant results in cooling, which is then followed by high-pressure condensation to reject heat to the surroundings. This cycle involves mechanical work applied by a compressor to increase the pressure of the working fluid, thus facilitating the transfer of heat from one area to another under controlled conditions .

Using eco-friendly refrigerants in vapor compression refrigeration systems is environmentally significant because it reduces ozone layer depletion and minimizes the greenhouse gas effect. Traditional CFCs were phased out due to their high ozone-depleting potential. In contrast, eco-friendly alternatives like HFCs and hydrocarbons have a lower environmental impact, ensuring compliance with international environmental protocols. This transition helps mitigate climate change and promotes sustainable industrial practices .

Refrigeration trainers simulate malfunctions and system diagnostics using cut-out and by-pass valves, hand valves, and an iManifold Kit for full diagnostic testing. These components allow users to create various scenarios for training by inducing faults and assessing the system's responses. This setup helps in understanding potential issues and developing troubleshooting skills, ensuring that learners can effectively manage real-world refrigeration systems .

The vapor compression cycle demonstrated by the refrigeration trainer includes components such as the evaporator, compressor, condenser, and the expansion valve. The evaporator absorbs heat, causing the refrigerant to evaporate at low pressure, which provides cooling. The compressor raises the refrigerant's pressure and transfers it to the condenser, where heat is released, and the refrigerant condenses back into a liquid. The expansion valve then reduces the pressure of the refrigerant, completing the cycle. These components function together to transfer heat, providing effective cooling .
