Read the definitions in the box and in your notebook, write your answer to
the questions that follow.

1. An air-conditioner is an apparatus which refrigerates the air passing through it.


2. A vacuum cleaner is a device which sucks up dust out of carpeted with a suction
fan.

Read through the definitions in the box below and tell which definition
is general and which is specific.

1. A scalene triangle is a triangle with noncongruent sides.


2. An isosceles triangle is a triangle with two congruent sides.
3. A triangle is a plane figure bounded with two congruent
sides.
4. An equilateral triangle is a triangle with three congruent
sides.
5. A segment is a geometric figure which is a subject of a line
and has two endpoints.
6. A quadrilateral is a polygon which has four sides.
7. A rectangle is a quadrilateral with four right angles.

 How do you know that definition is specific?


 How do you know that definition is general?

A specific definition, in contrast with a general definition


defines a type or of thing. Consider the examples below:

1. An obtuse triangle is a triangle with one obtuse angle.


2. An obtuse triangle is a plane figure with one obtuse
angle.

Remember that you can use a general class word ( as in


example 2) or repeat a noun (as in example 1) in writing
a specific definition.
