Vocabulary Words
1 – Minutes – a summary or record of what it is said or decided at a formal meeting.
Example: We read through the minutes of the last meeting.
2 – Connotation - an idea suggested by a word in addition to its main meaning. Interpretation or
alternate meaning of a word.
Example: The word ‘professional’ has connotations of skill and excellence.
3 - Denotation - the act of naming something with a word; the actual object or idea to which the
word refers. Formal meaning of a word.
Example: The girl was blue. Connotation implies the girl is sad; denotation means she is
literally blue.
4 – Comprehensiveness - the fact of including all, or almost all, the items, details, facts,
information, etc. that may be involved.
Example: He has showed remarkable comprehensiveness in his work.
5 – Cognate - having the same origin as another word or language.
Example: German and Dutch are cognate languages.
6 – False Cognate – a pair of words that seem to be cognates because of similar sounds and
meaning but have different etymologies. In other words, they are not related to each other.
Example: “Carpet” in English and “carpeta” in Spanish are false cognates.
7 – Seed bank - stores seeds to preserve genetic diversity; hence it is a type of gene bank.
Example: Due to the surge in cannabinoids usage, seed banks with marihuana plant seeds
are available now.
8 – Freegan - person who only eats food that they can get for free and that would usually be
thrown out or wasted.
Example: She is a freegan and has subsisted on eating a dumpster-based diet for two years.
9 – Vector - an insect or other organism that carries a particular disease from one living thing to
another.
Example: Mosquitos are vectors for malaria, dengue fever and chikungunya.
10 – Monoculture – the agricultural practice of growing only one type of crop on a certain area
of land.
Example: My neighbor has a monoculture of corn.
11 – Chancellor – the official head of some universities. Given as an honorary title. Highest
ranking academic position.
Example: The chancellor at the University of Puerto Rico in Ponce is Hortensia Cruz.

12 – Affiliations - one group or organization’s official connection with another.
Example – She has had affiliations with that organization since 1999.
13 – Upcycle - to treat an item that has already been used in such a way that you make
something of greater quality or value than the original item.
Example: Plastic detergent bottles can be upcycled into homemade planters.
14 - Infographic - information or data that is shown in a chart, diagram, etc. so that it is easy to
understand.
Example: We had to make an infographic about hurricanes for science class.
15 – Obsolescence - the state of becoming old-fashioned and no longer useful.
Example: One of the items from the 2000’s that had a perceived obsolescence after a decade
were CDs.
