A Guide for Students and Parents 2020

Dear Parents and Carers,

As you are well aware, the next few months are a crucial time in the lives of your children as
they complete controlled assessments and prepare themselves for their final GCSE exams. 



Organisation and planning are the key to your child’s success. Those students who have a
good understanding of their subject, organise their revision effectively and use their time
appropriately, do best. Students whose parents are involved in their revision are also more
likely to achieve better grades. Regardless of what they (may) tell you, they need to start
revising now!



There is a huge amount of support available to all students, including after school revision
classes, tutor support, personalised revision plans, online resources, practice papers or
simply someone to chat to about coping with the pressures of Year 11. 



How you can help:

At Isca Academy, we believe in strong home/school partnerships. We want your child to
reach their full potential both here and beyond, and we need your help. Students need a
positive attitude towards the support on offer, and need to take advantage of the extra-
curricular sessions available.

We would really appreciate your support by:

• Encouraging your child to attend all the relevant revision sessions, including those
taking place in the Easter break.
• Helping them organising their personal time outside of school, ensuring revision,
homework, controlled assessments and project work are all up to date.
• Directing them towards the websites and revision tools listed in this booklet.

Continuing to encourage them to make the most of every lesson in school.
• Contacting the school if you have concerns about their access to resources, mental
health, or general well-being.

 REVISION IDEAS

Give yourself plenty of time

1 Start early to avoid feeling panicked and stressed. The longer you give yourself the
less pressure you’ll be under during the exams and you’ll have plenty of time to
focus, get help and go over all you need to know,

Make a revision timetable

2 Once you know your exam timetable (see the back of this booklet) work out a plan,
prioritise the subjects that come up first, or the ones you need to work hardest on.
Give yourself variety on your plan and room for some flexibility.

Revising with a friend 

This can be useful, especially if you test each other. But make a plan to help you
stay focused – what are you going to get done? By what time?

4 Have an aim for each session

Eg “by the end of this two hour session I will understand and be able to answer
questions on coastal erosion.”

5 Plan to revise a few topics at a time for each subject and then revisit each before
the exam.

6 Ask your teacher for past exam questions and give yourself a mock. Mark it
yourself!

7 Scan your notes on each topic and then make mind-maps summarising the main
points. Use colour!

8 Revisit your notes briefly after one day, one week, and one month, as well as
just before the exam - this is a really effective strategy. Try it!

9 Find out the assessment criteria for your target grade. What do you have to do
to reach your target? How could you find out?

10 Prioritise Think about what you know well already and what you need to spend
more time on.

Use pictures, post-it notes, colour charts and other visual reminders of

11 key parts of each subject. Put them in places where you will see them regularly for
some quick revision moments while you make a cup of tea or clean your teeth!

Tell someone else what you have learned - this can be a friend but also
a parent, older brother or sister, or another family member. This helps you to recall
what you’ve learnt and realise if there are parts you need to know a bit better.

 REVISION IDEAS

Picture stories 

This is a revision technique where you think of a strong visual image to associate with
each word and link them together in an unlikely and silly story.
For example, you may find it hard to remember the facts in this sentence simply by
reading it through:
The Great Plague struck London in 1665, followed by the fire of London in 1666, starting
in the shop of the baker to King Charles II in Pudding Lane’.
Try this out:
Get a picture in your head (for example) of a large rat (the plague) running around
before being burnt (plague year before fire) in a bread oven (baker’s shop) with the
flames curling up around it like the curls of the numbers 666 (1666), and then being put
into a pudding eaten by two King Charles Spaniels.
Go through the picture sequence a couple of times, then see if you can remember the 7
facts in the sentence.
Ask someone to test you, and see if it works for them.

 HOW CAN I USE MY KNOWLEDGE ORGANISER FOR
REVISION?

Your mind is split into two parts: the working-memory and the long-term memory.
Everybody’s working memory is limited, and can very easily become overwhelmed; this
is known as overload. Your long-term memory, on the other hand, is effectively a
limitless storehouse for information.

Revising for GCSE exams requires your mind to be working as effectively as

possible. Trying to memorise large amounts of information in a short space of time will
lead to an overload on your working memory. Using your Knowledge Organiser is more
important than ever as you prepare for your GCSEs, because it will allow you to
systematically learn information over time. It is important to start early, to give yourself
the time to embed knowledge into long-term memory.

Let’s look at an example, the basic number fact: 7 x 8 = 56

If you can instantly recall that 7 x 8 = 56, your working memory has
more space to think about a more difficult problem, like 37 x 8. The
answer of 56 comes effortlessly, and you can focus on 30 x 8, then add
the product to the 56 in your head.
If you do not know that 7 x 8 = 56 straight away, you are more likely to
become confused and frustrated. Being able to very quickly recall key
facts is a way of hacking your working memory, making thinking about
difficult stuff much easier.

You have Knowledge Organiser booklets for two terms of learning. Each knowledge
organiser provides the basis of the knowledge you need for success in your
exams. It is important to then add to this knowledge base with further revision and
exam practice, both independently and with your teachers.

Paper 1 Section A: One unseen fiction text from C20th/C21st. Students answer
Content 4 questions. Worth 25% of English Language GCSE

Paper 2 Section A: Two unseen non-fiction texts, one from C19th, one from
C20th/C21st. Students answer 4 questions which compare the two texts. Worth

Subject Unit 1 is the student’s Personal Portfolio, where you present all your
Content learning, projects and investigations from the start of your GCSE in Year
10 until the start of the exam in year 11. 60% of the final grade.
Unit 2 is the exam paper. It’s called the Externally Set Assignment and
we start it in January. The exam paper includes this year’s topic, some
starting points and recommended artists. Students are expected to lead a
personal creative investigation on the theme provided. 40% of final grade

Exam The exam preparation time started on the week of the 6th January and will
Breakdown end with the 10 hour exam on the week of the 20th April.
During this preparation time students lead their own investigations on the
exam topic, developing ideas, researching artists, producing and refining
test pieces and experiments.
During the 10 hour exam students produce their final piece in response to
the exam topic. Students must have all their preparation studies with
them during the 10 hour exam, as teachers are not allowed to help with
ideas or plans for development.

Controlled You have four Assessment Objectives in your exam paper:

success Be accurate on SKILLS questions – these are easy marks! For
example look at graph scales and be precise with figures, look
carefully at map scales to give accurate distances etc.

STUDY resources like maps, diagrams, graphs, photographs, satellite

images etc. Don’t just GLANCE at them! “Study” means “look carefully
at / find the details”.
More top tips
for success • Pick out the COMMAND WORDS in a question e.g. study, describe,
compare, explain etc. These are the words which TELL YOU WHAT
TO DO and also WHAT YOU GET MARKS FOR!!!

• DEVELOP your answers to get more marks in a 4 or 6 mark

question e.g. Explain why the Sahel gets droughts. Simple answer =
The Sahel gets droughts because the band of rain never gets far
enough north. Developed answer = The Sahel gets droughts
because the low pressure Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (which
has rain) usually stays too far south due to the NE Trade Winds
being stronger than the opposing SE Trade Winds.

• Learn the difference between DESCRIBE and EXPLAIN. 


Describe = say what you see. 

Explain = give reasons for what you see. 

Describing is easy. Explaining can be harder.

• Know the names of SOME EXAMPLES e.g. the SAHEL is an

example of an area affected by desertification.

• Use your pack of REVISION CARDS frequently so you know all the
“standard” answers to some pretty common questions.

• Make sure you know the common MAP SKILLS – 4 figure grid
references, 6 figure grid references, how to measure distances,
points of the compass for directions, how to read height on maps
using contours and spot heights.

• Learn your TWO FIELDWORK POINTS as thoroughly as you can –

in 2018 they are FLOWS and MITIGATING RISKS

• Ensure you are making a clear DECISION in Component 2. Give

reasons for your choice, and say why you rejected other options.
Make it clear that you understand no option is perfect – the exam is
