L-3 Ocean Systems Reelable TASS

L-3 Ocean Systems' Reelable Towed Array Sonar System (RTASS) uses a thin-walled, flexible hose towed behind submarines to detect other submarines over long distances with high sensitivity. The system employs modern digital technology and hydrodynamic design for improved performance while minimally impacting the towing submarine. The array can be reeled in when not in use.

Reelable Towed Array

Sonar Systems

Features L-3 Ocean Systems’ Reelable Towed Array Sonar System (RTASS)
leverages the proven technology of the US Navy’s TB-23 series
• High search and tow speeds submarine thinline towed array. RTASS employs highly sensitive
passive hydrophones arranged within a small-diameter flexible
• Long detection range
hose that is towed behind a submerged submarine to detect,
• Low frequency, very sensitive localize and prosecute submarines in all types of environments.

• Low self noise Incorporated in the sonar system are the most modern towed
array acoustic engineering advancements including digital tech-
• Minimal impact on
nology, improved hydrodynamic performance and wide band-
submarine performance
width telemetry. Modular in design, the RTASS can be tailored to
fit most specific operational requirements. When not in use, the
array can be reeled onto a capstan located on the submarine.

The TB-23 towed array is towed behind the subma-

rine’s own self noise, greatly improving search effec-
tiveness while minimally impacting the sub’s
performance.

L-3 Ocean Systems is a certified USN depot of towed

arrays and has built more US Navy Thinline Towed
Array systems than any other company. Almost all US
Navy submarines carry at least one towed array built
and supported by Ocean Systems. Our facilities for
array fabrication and testing are established and
proven. High customer satisfaction has been a hallmark of Ocean
Systems due to the high quality and reliability of our built arrays.

Submarine Towed Arrays
• TB-16F – The latest fatline array with heading sensors
• TB-23 – The standard thinline array with improvements
• TB-29A – The new thinline array being developed by the
Omnibus program

The TB-23 is currently being updated with modern sensors and

telemetry to provide enhanced performance in littoral waters. The
updated TB-23L will be the only thinline reelable towed array built
with this capability. An export version, the TB-23F, is also available.

The L-3 Ocean Systems towed array

system can be installed with a
standalone processor/display console or
integrated into an existing sonar
processing system.
