TITLE: School Learning Action Cell (SLAC) Session on Reading Comprehension Focuses
on Inferencing,Finding the Main Idea of the text and Its Supporting Details (Filipino)

INCLUSIVES DATE AND TIME: October 20,21 & 22 ,2021 at 3:00-5:00 PM

Teachers should never stop pursuing professional development amidst the
pandemic. The Department is committed in developing teachers' full potential including
improving teaching skills, gaining new knowledge, and enhancing strategies in delivering
quality education. It is also an opportunity for teachers to renew their motivation and
confidence in teaching 21st-century learners. Diverse teaching techniques should be learned
and be developed to meet the learners' needs. It is the responsibility of the teachers to
embark new knowledge in the minds of learners for them to adapt to the current trends and
globalization. Pursuant to the implementation of the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013,
the Department of Education issues the policy entitled The Learning Action Cell (LAC) as a
K to 12 Basic Education Program School-Based Continuing Professional Development
Strategy for the Improvement of Teaching and Learning. The Department of Education fully
supports the continuing professional development of its teaching personnel based on the
principle of lifelong learning and DepEd’s commitment to the development of teachers’
potential aimed towards their success in the profession. The Department also supports in
continuously fulfilling its mandate to produce productive and responsible citizens equipped
with the essential competencies and skills for lifelong learning. In a move to bridge literacy
gaps among learners, the Department of Education (DepEd) is intensifying its campaign on
reading proficiency with the unveiling of Hamon: Bawat Bata Bumabasa (3Bs) initiative.
This session entitled School Learning Action Cell (SLAC) Session on Reading
Comprehension Focuses on Inferencing, Finding the Main Idea of the Text, and Its
Supporting Details (Filipino) focuses on cultivating the ability of teachers to teach literacy
during the pandemic. It aimed to determine the different readiness and skills on how to teach
reading, select reading instruction texts using a set of criteria, discuss the different strategies
and techniques on how to teach Inferencing, determine the main idea from the different
written texts, and enumerate the steps in determining supporting details inside the text.

The session was held last October 20, 2021 at 3:00 PM-5:00 PM. The logging-in
registration of participants through an online attendance sheet was facilitated by Mrs. Lalaine
S. Rivera, the co-chairman of the Planning Committee. The program formally starts with an
interfaith prayer followed by an opening message delivered by Dr. Alex S. Tanawit, Head
Teacher VI of the Filipino Department.
The first speaker, Mrs. Gracelyn B. Camorongan talked about the Pagtuturo ng
Pagbasa Nang may Pang-Unawa(Teaching Reading with Comprehension).She tackled the
different meanings of reading stated by the famous writers and philosophers, the importance
of reading with comprehension , and the significant role of a teacher in teaching literacy to
every learner. To achieve literacy, learners should undergo the three (3) steps in reading.
The first step is Bago Bumasa(Pre-reading) wherein teachers will give preparatory activities
like identifying and finding the meaning of uncommon words and asking the learners’ prior
knowledge about the text. Second,Habang Bumabasa(While Reading), learners will note
important pieces of information and details. They can also use organizational charts,
diagram, outline or semantic maps for highlighting important informations. The last step is
Pagkatapos Bumasa(Post Reading), wherein learners will ask to create a plot relationship
chart, cause and effect chart, comparison or contrast chart. They will also ask to make a
conclusion and reaction about the [Link] ended her discussion with a quote from Ruth
Beechick , stating that “A teacher who loves learning earns the right and the ability to help
others learn.”
The second speaker,Miss Jay Lyn May P. [Link] the Pamimili ng Angkop
na Teksto sa Pagbasa(Selecting Appropriate Text on Reading).She emphasized the
different things we need to consider in selecting appropriate text in reading. One thing is we
need to identify the profile of the learners including the culture, interest, age, sex ,race ,
status or religion they belong with . We also need to consider the learners prior knowledge
about the content of the text and make sure that it is free from [Link] our
main goal is to nurture the minds of learners,teach them to think logically and to allow them
to show out their best and not to torture [Link]’s why teachers are encourage to use
localized,contextualized or indigenized text in teaching reading.
The first-day session ended with a thought "We read as one would breathe air,to fill
up and live”by Annie Dilliard,an American writer.

SECOND DAY
The session was held last October 21,2021 at 3:00 PM-5:00 PM. The logging-in

starts with an interfaith prayer and followed by the short recapitulation of Mrs. Agnes A.
Lagasca.
The assigned speakers for the second day were Mr. Marlon C. Sabangan and
[Link]-Jeff M. [Link] talked about Pagtuturo ng Paghihinuha(Teaching
Inference in Reading) wherein he enumerated the different ways and strategies in teaching
[Link] is the Directed Reading-Thinking Activity,through this the learners will form
an idea of what will happen and what are the solutions to the problems encountered by the
characters inside the story while reading the text. Second is Reciprocal Teaching,teachers
may use modeling as a technique in explaining the content of the [Link] technique has
four categories including predictor,clarifier,questioner and [Link] is the Question-
Answer-Relationship wherein teachers will allow learners to read the guide questions,read
the text,and ask them to answer the [Link] is the Justifying Answers,learners will
ask to justify their answers through finding details that can support their [Link] is the
Graphic Organizers,this will help learners to deliver their thoughts in a clear,organize and
short but comprehensive.
The next speaker was Mr. Icasas,who tackled about the Pagtuturo sa Pagtukoy sa
Pangunahing Ideya sa Teksto(Teaching on Identifying the Main Idea of the Text).His topic
focused on how to find or identify the main idea of the [Link] became possible through
giving sample [Link] reminded us that the main idea of the text is always the topic being
talked inside the [Link] can be seen either in introduction,body or in the last part of the
[Link] the main idea of the text is not directly stated in the text ,that’s why we
should teach our learners to read comprehensively.
“Real comprehension has to do with thinking learning and expanding a reader’s
knowledge and [Link] has to do with building on past knowledge,mastering key
information,connecting with the minds of those you’ve never met” according to Zimmerman
and Hutchins,this quote enlightened everyone at the end of the session.

THIRD DAY
The session was conducted last October 22,2021 at 3:00 PM-5: 00 PM. The logging-

The last speaker for this session was Miss Mary Grace S. [Link] discussed
the Pagtuturo ng Pagtukoy ng Detalye ng Teksto(Teaching on Identifying the Supporting
Details in the Text).She reiterated the importance of identifying the main idea of the text to
find its supporting details. There are strategies in determining supporting [Link]
includes Explicit Teaching(Direktang Pagtuturo),Scaffolded Graphic Organizer,Sematic or
Conceptual Mapping and Cloze [Link] teaching may help learners to develop
their [Link] can be done through modeling,collaborative group activity and
individual [Link] Using Scaffolded Graphic Organizer, the students will have a
clear outline in finding [Link] or Conceptual Mapping may encourage students to
share their own experiences and connect it with the idea of the [Link] is the Cloze
Procedure,wherein learners are ask to complete the missing thought or details of the
text/sentence.
The third and last day of the session ended with the awarding of Certificate of
Participation to all participants and the Certificate of Recognition was awarded to all lecturers
and members of the [Link] finally end the program , Dr. Alex [Link] , Head
Teacher VI of the Filipino Department, gave his closing [Link] reminded the
participants to become responsible and show the importance of teaching reading with
[Link],the teachers of the Filipino Department are advocates for eradicating
[Link] believe that “Sa Pagbasa ,May Pag-asa”!
